Coping Skills Training Problem Solving Can an integrated skills-based
stress management program
combined with an executive function
training program will improve
coping, cognitive function,
and prevent mental illness in college students? *Problem solving requires one to
complete a series of steps in order to generate and try out solutions to address a controllable stressor. Mindfulness Mindfulness requires one to
be in the moment and aware,
of one's surroundings, accepting
the present in a non-judgemental
fashion. Cognitive Reappraisal Cognitive reappraisal teaches one to learn to identify, challenge, and change negative or intrusive thoughts into more realistic and
positive thoughts. Emotion regulation: Expressive Writing and Progressive Muscle Relaxation *Emotion regulation focuses on understanding emotions and stress through a number of techniques.

*PMR requires focus on the muscle groups in the body to tense and relax them in an ordered fashion in order to relieve stress.

* Expressive writing requires 15 minute
intervals writing about emotions daily. What is coping? Coping is conscious, volitional efforts to regulate behaviors, thoughts, and emotions in response to stressful events or circumstances. There are a number of coping skills that are helpful when faced with a stressful event or situation. The program that we have developed includes four coping strategies that are taught in a 6-week period. Why teach four coping skills? When people are faced with a stressful situation or event,
there are certain coping strategies that are best used depending on the type of stressor.

We distinguish between two main types of stressors: controllable and uncontrollable. Here we will focus on the stress management program that will be offered as a part of a combined stress management-executive function intervention for college students. When a stressor is NOT under your control, you need to adapt yourself to the stressor. In these circumstances, coping strategies like mindfulness and cognitive restructuring are most useful.

When a stressor IS under your control, you can do something to try to change the stressor. In this case, coping strategies like problem solving and emotion regulation are helpful.

Let's take a closer look at the skills we will be teaching in our stress management program... Groups of 6-8 students will meet with a leader once a week over the course of 6 weeks to learn and practice these coping strategies. They will complete homework between each session to practice the skills they learn each week. Questions?
