System of a Down
Transcript of System of a Down
A LOT of System's inspiration comes from the Beatles! Again, not a "political band", but... Kailei, what is a "system of a down"? Desperately seeking attention? Of course not...^_^; Let's talk some Turkey. Welllllllllll... In 1915, Turkey nearly wiped out the entire Armenian population. The members of SOAD, all being Armenian, have nothing against Turkish people, but refuse to play in a country that slaughtered their ancestors. It's the Turkish govenrment they have a problem with. Turkey, to this day, has denied the Armenian Genocide entirely. Yes, they know it happened, but they don't want to take responsibilty for it or pay for it. When running for office, most American presidents say they'll recognize Turkey's acts as a genocide, but shy away from that once they start having to deal with Turkey and foreign policy issues. Unlike most rockstars who try to get as many of their songs played on the radio as they can, System worries that if this happens, the band will become "overexposed". System of a Down is obviously known not only for being the best band ever xD but for having a very strong negative view on our government and society. In fact, many of their songs are about the genocide, massacres, and war, such as "Boom!", which is about how mankind puts its money and effort toward killing each other instead of helping those who are starving and dying. It is implied in the music video that the song is a tribute to John Lennon and Yoko Ono. (my...second favourite band) Only the awesomest metal band ever. This is SOAD. From left to right, we have:
Shavo Odadjian ...and they are all extremely adorable
...like puppies and kittens And by the time I'm finished, you will walk out of this room knowing way more about them than you'd ever wish you did. *ahem* Daron *Warning*
This Prezi was created by an insane fangirl, so it may include ranting and overusage of the word "adorable".
Thanks for bearing with me~ The only member to be born in the U.S. Adorable Guitarist & vocalist- SOAD & Scars On Broadway Ranked 4th best guitarist of the year, according to Metal Edge Magazine in '05 Ranked 11th best guitarist, in Music Radar's "20 Greatest Metal Guitarists Ever" Ranked 30th best guitarist in Guitar World's "100 Greatest Metal Guitarists of All Time" Ranked #1 in the hearts of fangirls (': Serj Vocalist & keyboardist- SOAD & solo Born in Lebanon Ranked 26th best singer in Hit Parader’s "Top 100 Metal Vocalists of All Time" Adorable Co-Founder of the Axis of Justice Quote: "We first fought in the name of religion, then communism, and now in the name of drugs and terrorism. Our excuses for global domination always change." Shavo Bassist Born in Armenia Also a DJ, goes by the name of "DJ Tactic", and plays pretty much any style of music... It ain't all about metal :) Also an artist- paints abstract stuff featured in music videos and used as backdrops at concerts One of the several celebrities that are a member of "Flaunt My Pet", a community dedicated to animal rights and putting an end to euthanization of animals John Drummer- SOAD & Scars On Broadway Adorable Born in Lebanon Inspired by his father's band Started out as the band's manager Replaced the original drummer, Andy Khachaturian, after a serious hand injury During the Lebanese Civil War, John (5 years old at the time) almost got shot, so his family decided it would be best to move to Canada...
Canada's pretty pieceful, right? Volunteers at D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Adorable Thus, they are not "drunk on fame". Daron, specifically, has made it very clear that one does not simply "catagorize" their style of music. It is not a heavy-metal band, a nu-metal band, or an Armenian band. It's just System of a Down. ...But apparently the fans who try to label them can be irritating. But System loves their fans, and they've toured just about all over the world. The only place that's not on the list of gigs is Turkey. And because I don't want you to asume SOAD is a racist band, that's what we'll talk about next. "As president, I will RECOGNIZE the Armenian genocide."
-Barack Obama Obama, however, has yet to break his promise. (Not that I'm promoting Obama or anything) Despite what you may think, they are not anti-government, but anti-war. The band is part of the Axis of Justice, a non-profit organization that fights for social and political change. Axis of Justice:
"We aim to build a bridge between fans of music around the world and local political organizations to effectively organize around issues of peace, human rights, and economic justice. Axis of Justice is a non-profit organization formed by Serj Tankian and Tom Morello. Its purpose is to bring together musicians, fans of music, and grassroots political organizations to fight for social justice." As far as religious beliefs go, none of the members have one solid religion. For Serj, it's mostly about spirit and nature. You can compare it to the beliefs of Hawaiian or Aborigine tribes. Daron has stated that to him religion turns ugly when it provokes incidents such as 9/11. That is not to say that he is against religion or any gods, but more the people who think it means they need to take lives because of it.
Quote from Daron:
"Jesus, save us from your followers!"
Meaning, not all, but some Christians believe their purpose is to persuade everyone to be Christian, or else the will not be saved. Once again, it isn't Christ himself that System has a problem with (in fact the quote is from a follower of Christ), but the followers who have begun to hate on other religions just because they choose to either believe in something else, or not believe in anything at all. However, a lot of the songs that are interpretted to be about government issues are really just about simple things.
In "Hypnotize", the line "I'm just sitting in my car and waiting for my girl",was thought to be a metaphor for the goal of modern people in this society. You have your luxury and wealth (car), now all you need is someone to share it with (girl).
But in reality, Daron was literally sitting in his car and waiting for his girlfriend when he wrote the lyrics.
"It doesn't really mean much. Whatever it means to you, that's what it means basically, and that meant nothing, so take that."
-Daron Malakian Not necessarily the style of music,
But some of the "random" lyrics resemble those of the Beatles,
And Daron can make his voice sound suspiciously like John Lennon's...... ._. Metallica
