Transcript of Songs For The Great Gatsby

By: Carolyn Batz

What Goes around: Justin Timberlake
Chapter 1
This song works as a theme song for the Great Gatsby because its talking about how a girl he used to be with is now with someone else. And that what goes around, will come back around eventually...maybe not in a good way. Not only does this have to do with Gatsby and Daisy. But it also works for Tom and his relationship with Myrtle. And that everything that happens will lead to consequences in the end.
Theme Song
I'm On Top of the World: Imagine Dragons
"If you love somebody
Better tell them while they’re here ’cause They just may run away from you.."

"Cause I’m on top of the world, ‘ay
I’m on top of the world, ‘ay
Waiting on this for a while now
Paying my dues to the dirt
I’ve been waiting to smile, ‘ay
Been holding it in for a while, ‘ay
Take you with me if I can.."
This song represents chapter one, with Nick starting a fresh new life in New York , and Gatsby, who let someone he loved go. Which is represented by him reaching towards the green light (Daisy).
Chapter 2
Blame: Calvin Harris ft. John Newman
"Cant you see I was manipulated.."
"Blame it on the night, Dont blame it on me.."
Chapter 2, Nick is accompanies Tom to visit the city. He soon realizes that he is being dragged along so Tom can visit his mistress, Myrtle. Tom invites other people and they drink and party all night, everyone gets wasted.
Chapter 3
Just the Girl: The Click 5
"Cause she's bittersweet,
she knocks me off of my feet,
and I can't help myself
I don't want anyone else.
She's a mystery,
she's too much for me,
but I keep coming back for more.
She's just the girl I'm looking for."

Chapter 4
This chapter is focused on the growing relationship between Nick and Jordan. At the beginning of the book Nick admits he is intimidated by her, but at the same time, he is attracted to her.
"I need another story
Something to get off my chest.."

"Oh, got no reason, got no shame
Got no family I can blame
Just don't let me disappear
I'ma tell you everything.."

"So tell me what you want to hear
Something that will light those ears
Sick of all the insincere
So I'm gonna give all my secrets away"

Secrets: OneRepublic
In chapter 4 Gatsby begins to open up to Nick about his past and his family. And soon Nick learns from Jordan about how Gatsby and Daisy used to like eachother, and that Gatsby is still in love with her.
Chapter 5
Feels like the first time: Foreigner
"I have waited a lifetime
Spent my time so foolishly
But now that I've found you
Together we'll make history.."
"I would climb any mountain
Sail across a stormy sea
If that's what it takes me baby
To show you how much you mean to me.."
In this chapter Gatsby anxiously awaits seeing Daisy face to face for the first time in many years. He wants it to be the same between them as it was before, which he is slighty successful at. A small flame between them is reignited. Little does Daisy know the measures that Gatsby has and will go to get her back.
Chapter 6
Kill-Jimmy Eat World
"Oh God, please don't tell me this has been in vain, I need answers for what all the waiting I've done means, You kill me, you've got some nerve, but can't face your mistakes. I know what I should do, but I just can't turn away..."
"I can't help it baby, this is who I am, Sorry, but I can't just go turn off how I feel, You kill me, you build me up, but just to watch me break, I know what I should do, but I just can't walk away..."

In this chapter, Daisy and Tom attend a party at Gatsbys house, and Gatsby cant help but steal Daisy away and confess his unwavering love for her. Gatsby has waited so long to be with her that he cant just let her go. He hopes that everything he has done to get her wont all be for nothing.
Chapter 7
The Girl is Mine- Michael Jackson
"Because She's Mine
The Doggone Girl Is Mine
Don't Waste Your Time
Because The Doggone Girl Is Mine.."

"But We Both Cannot Have Her So It's One Or The Other And One Day You'll Discover That She's My Girl Forever And Ever.."
Chapter 7 is when Tom and Gatsby begin to fight over Daisy. Unfortunately Gatsby is in a rough position, as Daisy is married and has a child. Gatsby is still trying to win her over in this chapter. And Daisy is obviously toying with his emotions.
Chapter 8
This is Gospel: Panic at the Disco
"This is gospel for the fallen ones, Locked away in permanent slumber, Assembling their philosophies From pieces of broken memories."
"Bury me alive
'Cause I won't give up without a fight.."
"If you love me let me go.."
In this chapter Gatsby has taken the blame for Myrtles death. But he is stubborn and wont leave even though Nick fears something will happen to him. It is seen that he will continue loving Daisy until his fateful demise. his love for Daisy was true, and he fought for her.
Chapter 9
Dont You (forget about me)-Simple Minds
"Think of the tender things that we were working on
Slow change may pull us apart.."
"Will you stand above me?
Look my way, never love me
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling, Down.."
"Don't you forget about me
As you walk on by
Will you call my name?"
This song basically sums up the chapter. Gatsby is dead and everything seems to be very gloomy and depressing. Daisy has left with Tom (leaving Gatsby behind). Gatsby had only wished for her to love him back.. the book comes to an end and Nick remembers Gatsby as a great man, and reflects on the memories they had together.
