Romans 8:14-17a

"14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ . . ."

(Payment of vengeance)
Extent:
Nature:
Expression:
"Wielding the Sword"
Taking life
"Instituted by God"
Derived authority
Punish the Wicked
Protect the Vulnerable
Refreshed in God's Sovereignty
God is in control
When Paul and Silas are in jail
When Jesus was in Pilate's court
When John the Baptist was beheaded
When prosecutors withhold evidence
When police abuse
When taxes are high
When politicians lie, steal, and cheat
Government can strengthen our faith by refreshing us in God’s sovereignty and renewing us in our responsibility.
When my health goes away
When my finances are in trouble
When relationships are soured
When storms rage
When the season is blessed
When doubts arise
When hurts abound
Our Response to God's Plan
Financial Submission
Relational Submission
1. We are not liable for how the government uses our taxes: "Render to Caesar"
2. It is God's intended design to support the government through taxation
3. This is a reminder that your money isn't yours but from God to steward
What Honor Is Not:
1. It is not keeping silent about sin
2. It is not always obeying
3. It is not always defending
What Honor Is:
1. It is obeying wherever possible
2. It is disagreeing respectfully
3. It is making appeals where we can when we have to obey God rather than man
4. It is using peaceful and non-violent means to oppose wicked laws and practices by the government
5. It is responding to hate, slander, prejudices, anger, and condemnation with truth spoken in love
Government can strengthen our faith by refreshing us in God’s sovereignty and renewing us in our responsibility.
