Who is Jane Austen?
She had a large family, of roughly middle class wealth and social standing. Her father was an Anglican rector and supervised Jane's education.
Time and Place
Takes place in Hertforshire, England in the early 19th century (Also known as the Regency Era, when King George III and his son, the "King Regent" ruled England)
Pride and Prejudice
Published in 1813, it was the second of Jane Austen's work to be published
Cast of Characters
The Bennets: Mr. Bennet, Mrs. Bennet, Jane (aka Miss Bennet), Elizabeth, Mary, Lydia, Catherine (aka Kitty)
Died July 18, 1817, and wrote until she could no longer hold a pencil
Born December 16, 1775 in Hampshire, England
Felt insecure about her writing all her life.
It centers on the lives of a few families living in the country and those who visit them: the Bennets, the Lucases, and the Bingleys
The novel is known for its unabashed satire of England's "landed gentry" or upper class and the societal pressures on young women to marry
