Vasco Nunez de Balboa was most famous for being the first person to cross the Isthmus of Panama to the Pacific Ocean. He was the first European to see the east side of the Pacific Ocean.
Vasco de Balboa was born in Jerez de los Caballeros, Spain in the year 1475. His parents were fairly wealthy and he was the third born child out of the four boys.

Meet Vasco Balboa
((not the real guy))
Balboa had been inspired by Christopher Columbus' voyages. Vasco eventually decided to go on his own adventure. He went to discover the Americas and to bring back gold and treasure. After realizing they didn't have enough men for the expedition, Balboa and some of the crew settled in Hispaniola. There, he became a pig farmer and a pretty unsuccessful one at that. In 1509, he joined a ship as a stowaway under the rule of Fransisco Pizzaro. He was found, but gained popularity with the crew and suggested they head to Darien instead of San Sabestian. There they went and Balboa become mayor of Santa Maria. He also become the governor of Veragua not long after being mayor in Santa Maria. Unfortunately, being governor contributed to his death to come in later years.
