If I Stay
Mia is the protagonist of the story. She is quiet, kind, and extremely musically gifted. She loves her family, her cello, and her friends. Mia is often feeling out of place next to her rock and roll, rebellious family and boyfriend. She wants to pursue her dreams to be a musician with her boyfriend by her side.
Adam is Mia’s boyfriend. He’s described as very handsome, and loves music. He plays guitar and sings for his band “Shooting Star”. Adam adores Mia very much.
Kim is Mia’s best friend. Kim and Mia are very much alike. Kim is sarcastic and obedient especially with her emotional mother. She and Mia are inseparable and they go to each other for everything.
After getting into a serious car accident, where her mom, her dad, and her brother died from, being forced with a serious decision, should she stay with her friends and her boyfriend, or go where her family is? Is it worth struggling to re-enter life and live it? That’s what she has to figure out before it’s too late.
The main theme of this story was love that will last through anything no matter what the circumstances are. Even though Mia was in the hospital, with high chances of not waking up. Adam stayed by her side, hoping and praying that she’ll wake up.
Gayle Forman is an American young
adult author. She began her career writing
for Seventeen magazine. Eventually, she
became a free journalist. In 2009, she released If I Stay. The film is supposed to come out August 22nd, 2014.
The author used similes and metaphors. She used them to exaggerate her descriptions and characteristics. The further she goes into exaggeration, the better image you’ll have, makes it easier to connect with the characters. She used imagery descriptions for the five senses multiple times. Example from the book: “The light is dim and artificial and kept to the same level all the time, but even so, the circadian rhythms win out and a nightmare has fallen over the place.”
I think this book was excellent. It can give a reader adrenaline by guessing what’s going to happen next. It’s unpredictable. It has a descriptive imagery where you can connect with the characters and feel their emotions. I’ve never read a book like this one and always kept me on my toes. I recommend this book to everyone and anyone.
