Transcript of Organizing for 3S Education

Presented by: Laura and Sophie In a Traditional Organization Development Process Define the problem
Analyze the causes
Fix what's broken
Focus on the decay
What is the problem?
Action plan treatment Organizing should be seen as a means to support the goal of education In a traditional approach to education, the main focus and goals involve improving students' scores on a standardized assessment... In order for a 3S Education to flourish, a "reculture" must occur Reculturing refers to "producing the capacity to seek, critically assess, and selectively incorporate new ideas and practices" Our Presentation Outcomes:
Provide examples of how to advance the CWP in both the short term and long term
Expose listeners to a new way of organizing for 3S Education, providing a way for the CWP to be embedded into our classrooms and schools Activity Time 1. Choose a norm from the bag.
2. Think about how your school either:
would be changed/different if the norm were true, or
how your school currently demonstrates this norm Organizing for 3S Education The Curriculum Wisdom Paradigm
supports the overall goal of developing students understanding of the subject matter, democratic self, and society... so... Should this be our ultimate goal in education? Fuller, 2001, p.44 How can a teacher or school reculture themselves? It starts with a recognition...
know your own beliefs or a school's beliefs
think about them critically, why do we have these beliefs?
Act with greater consciousness about our behavior We must understand that these patterns have a very powerful, enduring impact on performance and can shape students and staff NEWSFLASH:
Current ways of organizing schools produce current results Let's Make A New Goal: Reculture our schools within the CWP Compare and Contrast
Traditional vs. CWP's Organization of Problem Solving Define the problem
Analyze the causes
Fix what's broken
Focus on the decay
What is the problem?
Action plan treatment Search for solutions that already exist by appreciating the best of "what is"
Envision what might be
Amplify what is working
Focus on live-giving forces
What is working well around here?
Innovating what will be Traditional Appreciative Inquiry Process "AI" idea borrowed from Cooperrider and Srivastva, 1987 Hammond, 1998
1. Someone who promotes the common good for all members of their community.
2. Someone who embodies self worth and civil behavior.
3. Someone who works with every level of school organization.
4. Someone who is motivated by a love for people, others may find meaning, purpose, and joy in the work of others.
5. Someone who works with others to question program design, evaluation of adult and student work, organizational structures, and relations between the school and the community. Now look back over your list and choose one name to write down a specific example of how that person has embodied the journey of democratic subject matter, self, and social understanding.
You should see that you have more faculty members who represent 3S understanding than you thought. Emphasizing what works in any organization:
1. List people who embodied democratic education.
2. List specific examples next to each name.
3. Send a note of recognition and gratitude to each person for his or her contribution.
4. Gather Like-Minded People Goals of Meeting:

-Define the problem that will motivate and
direct the work
-Plan one lesson that incorporates a new teaching style or different resources
-Invite teachers to observe your lesson
-Evaluate and reflect on the lesson Move from Self to School:
-Try to have weekly collaborative time for teachers to meet

-Communicate with parents, community members, and all stakeholders Move from Week to Organizing the Work Year:
-Think about changing the way you teach a whole unit
-adopt an approach to decision making and problem solving that recognizes the inherent unpredictability of situations and admits the possibility of error, understands each moment is different from the one proceeding it, is attentive to present circumstances, and alert to the implications of these consequences for our democratic way of life.
