A Separate Peace
by John Knowles

John Knowles wrote from his experiences. Each character is a "piece" of him.
Knowles died in 2001.
All of my books are based on places, places I know very well and feel very deeply about. I begin with that place and then the characters and the plot emerge from it. . . A Separate Peace began with a playing field at Exeter Academy.

Place: The Devon School, an exclusive New England preparatory academy For Boys (Similar to a private High School)
The story begins in 1958, but quickly flashes back to the years of 1942-1943
(Amidst World War II)

Gene's resident Doctor. A caring man.

absolute obedience from the students.
Gene's main rival for valedictorian, sincerely loves to learn
Manager of the crew team,
no one really cares for him

A classmate of Gene & Finny. Quiet,
loves nature and is not very
popular at school.
Soft spoken, avid skier, and naturalist
The narrator & protagonist
of the novel.

World War II and the draft is an ongoing conflict and metaphor in the novel
Nature plays a large role in this novel and reflects larger conflicts throughout the story.
