THE ROAD IS AHEAD, MY FRIENDS
GOOD DAY, EVERYONE
My name is
Bui Hai Anh
You can call me
MrBi
I studied at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium)
I now work as an English tutor and an entrepreneur

There are two STRANGE topics I want to share with you today, so you may want to take note

TOPIC 2

NOMINALISATION
I HOPE THAT YOU’VE HAD A GOOD DAY WITH USEFUL INFORMATION AND TIPS FROM ALL THE ENTHUSIASTIC TUTORS INCLUDING ME

WE WISH YOU ALL THE BEST IN THE IELTS TEST!
TOPIC 1

SUMMATIVE MODIFIER

PRODUCE THE ‘MORE FORMAL’ SENTENCES
ONE EXAMPLE
Lots of people dislike the canteen because there are too many people when it is lunch time or dinner time, the food is horrible, the price of sandwiches keeps going up and too many construction workers are there.

=> This sentence is acceptable in IELTS Speaking, but appears to be ‘informal’ or ‘not good enough’ in Writing.

Lots of people dislike the canteen because there are too many people when it is lunch time or dinner time, the food is horrible, the price of sandwiches keeps going up and too many construction workers are there.
NOW, WE HAVE A MORE FORMAL SENTENCE
Among the
frequently-made criticisms
regarding the canteen are
the overcrowding during meal times
,
poor food quality
,
continual increases in the price of sandwiches
and
the presence of large numbers of construction workers
from nearby sites.
HOW TO PRODUCE A SUMMATIVE MODIFIER?
WHY SHOULD WE USE NOMINALISATION?
BECAUSE MORE 'FORMAL' NOUNS
MAY
BRING YOUR ESSAYS TO A HIGHER LEVEL
EXAMPLE
Crime rate was
increasing rapidly
and the police were
becoming concerned.

The
rapid increase
in crime rate was causing
concern
among the police.

The second sentence is more formal
The idea is straightforward in the second sentence

OVER-NOMINALISATION
The
taking
of
evasive measures
resulting in the
avoidance
of
predatory actions
by the
offending party
was a result of the
meeting
of the previously mentioned little pigs and their
awareness
of the
premeditation
of the wolf in terms of harmful
deceptions
and his
cleverness
in the
execution
of his criminal
intentions
.

Versus

The little pigs evaded the attempt of the sneaky wolf to kill them because they had met before and knew that he planned to deceive and to kill them.

Lots of people dislike the canteen
because there are
too many people when it is lunch time or dinner time
,
the food is horrible
,
the price of sandwiches keeps going up
and
too many construction workers
are there.
Then, find a noun that tell you what the independent clause is all about
Wireless communication has made it easier not only to keep in touch with people but also to let others find you anywhere and anytime

What is this all about? Maybe it is
A TREND
WHY DO WE HAVE TO USE A SUMMATIVE MODIFIER?
Finally, develop with

a relative clause

Wireless communication has made it easier not only to keep in touch with people but also to let others find you anywhere and anytime,
a trend

that contributes

to the high stress level in workplaces today.

Or,

a participial phrase

…,
a trend

contributing

to the high stress level in workplaces today.

FUNDAMENTAL
SUMMATIVE MODIFIER: A modifier (usually a noun phrase) that appears at the end of a sentence
Serves to summarize the idea of the main clause, then (if possible) develop it

Example:
Economic changes have reduced Russian population growth to less than zero,
a demographic event that will have serious social implications.
DISTINGUISH
Economic changes have reduced Russian population growth to less than zero
which will have serious social implications.

The red letters are the
RELATIVE CLAUSE

Economic changes have reduced Russian population growth to less than zero,
a demographic event that will have serious social implications.

The blue letters are the
SUMMATIVE MODIFIER
BECAUSE IT MAKES A LONG SENTENCE EASIER TO READ
More marks for
Coherence & Cohesion

BECAUSE IT ADDS A NEW GRAMMATICAL STRUCTURE
More marks for
Grammatical Range & Accuracy

BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO FIND A SUITABLE WORD TO DESCRIBE A WHOLE SENTENCE
More marks for
Lexical Resource

First, you write an independent clause
Wireless communication has made it easier not only to keep in touch with people but also to let others find you anywhere and anytime
FUNDAMENTAL
Nominalisation is the use of abstract nouns created from verbs or adjectives

Occurrence
instead of occur
Ease
instead of easy
