Chapter 2: Chemistry of Life
Main Idea #1: Living things consist of atoms of different elements
An atom has a nucleus and electrons.
The nucleus has protons (+) and neutrons (----).
Electrons (-) are in energy levels outside nucleus.
Ionic vs. Covalent Bonds
Main Idea #2: Ions form when atoms gain or lose electrons

Element:

Compound:
made of two or more atoms OF DIFFERENT ELEMENTS!!

Atoms are most stable when they have a full outer energy level. They will gain, lose, or share (covalent) electrons to get a full outer shell
