Will Grayson, Will Grayson
Transcript of Will Grayson, Will Grayson
Intended Audience and Rating
Will Grayson, Will Grayson
Being quite the mellow 17 year old student, Will Grayson only really follows two rules in his life, "Don't care too much" and "Shut up." Will tends to keep to himself during school and loves to obsess over his favorite band, Neutral Milk Hotel. During the book, Will faces a few difficulties such as telling and showing a girl how much she means to him and surviving high school without being too embarrassed.
A Note Before the Presentation
Since two of the characters in this book have the same name, the second "Will Grayson" that I introduce you to will have his name written in all lowercase letters. Any sentence written about only him will also be in all lowercase letters, just like the writing style used in the book.
will grayson is a timid high school student who deals with the problems of homosexuality and clinically diagnosed depression daily. all will cares about in life is his mom and his online friendship/relationship with isaac.
Usually the only person who will speaks to at school, Maura is a gothic teenage girl who runs a fake online profile by the name of "Isaac" which she uses to catfish* will as a joke. Maura isn't a character who is in the book at all points, but her role was needed in the main plot.
Tiny is the homosexual best friend of Will Grayson. He is known for being a very tall, chubby football player who goes through boyfriends EXTREMELY fast. Tiny is very involved in school activities such as writing a musical about himself for the entire community to see and being president of the Gay-Straight Alliance. Although Tiny lives a great life, he doesn't feel appreciated.
*Catfish: someone who pretends to be someone who they aren't on an online social media platform in order to form a misleading relationship
Jane Turner is the music-loving, quiet yet spontaneous character of the story. She loves to write poems and stuff random notes into Will's locker. During the story, Jane develops romantic feelings for Will.
The setting of the book is mainly placed in the city of Chicago, Illinois. The setting is important to the story since Chicago has a more bland speech compared to other cities or states, so the speech makes it easier for the reader to analyze the character.
Two Chicago teens, both named Will Grayson, meet at a corner one very bizarre night. They quickly become friends, and will develops a relationship with Tiny Cooper. During the story, all of the characters go through many ups and downs, from Will trying to start a relationship with Jane and Tiny stressing out over the production of "Tiny Dancer" and trying to get will to realize that there are people who love him in this world. Will the show go on? Will Tiny and will stay together? Will Will Grayson realize his feelings for Jane are something more than just friends? Read the book and find out!
About the Authors
In my opinion, the intended audience for this book is anyone over the age of 13. I believe this is a good age range because of the foul language and scenes that play out in the book. I would give this book a five star rating.
John Green was born on August 24, 1977. He is a very famous American author who writes fictional books for young adults and also a vlogger. Green attended Kenyon College with a double major in Religious Studies and English. Some of his most famous books are
Looking for Alaska,
which won the Michael L. Printz award, and
The Fault in Our Stars
, which has recently been adapted into a movie. He is currently living in Indianapolis, Indiana with his wife, Sarah and two kids. John Green wrote the odd numbered chapters in this book.
David Levithan was born on September 7, 1972. Levithan is an editor and an award-winning novelist. Some of his popular books include Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist and Boy Meets Boy, which have gay male characters just like will grayson. David Levithan is known to write heartwarming yet comical stories and make upcoming writers known to America. Currently, Levithan is working at Scholastic as an editorial directior, which is a large step from the internship he was offered by Scholastic at the age of 19.

Neutral Milk Hotel
“When things break, it's not the actual breaking that prevents them from getting back together again. It's because a little piece gets lost - the two remaining ends couldn't fit together even if they wanted to. The whole shape has changed.”
“Maybe there's something you're afraid to say, or someone you're afraid to love, or somewhere you're afraid to go. It's gonna hurt. It's gonna hurt because it matters.”
"Being in a relationship, that's something you choose. Being friends, that's just something you are."
"Caring doesn't sometimes lead to misery, it always does."
