Erwin Schrodinger was an Austrian physicist who contributed towards the field of
quantum theory
. He developed many contributions toward the foundation of
wave mechanics
.
The Electron Cloud Model
In the mid 1920's, Erwin Schrodinger replaced the
Bohr Model
with a new model called the
Electron Cloud Model
.
The
Electron Cloud Model
was a more accurate way to display the placement of electrons within an atom. The Electron Cloud Model also allowed a more
comprehensive
way of describing the
properties
of an electron
[n, l, m]

Why the Change?
Bohr's Model
had the electrons moving around the atom at
fixed orbits
in a
2D
space. Schrodinger improved upon that idea and created the
Electron Cloud Model
, which used "orbitals" that showed the movement of electrons in a
3D
space.
In the
Electron Cloud Model
, Schrodinger developed "Schrodinger Equation," a function that predicts the
probability
of an electron's position.
Schrodinger Equation: Ĥψ = Eψ
Bohr's Model
only used a
single
quantum number
[n]
to describe the
"orbit"
of an electron.
The
Electron Cloud Model
is an improvement from the
Bohr Model
as it

uses
3
quantum numbers
[n, l, m]
to describe the
"orbital"
of an electron rather than 1.
One of the most
important
changes Schrodinger contributed towards the Atomic Model was the introduction of the
Electron Cloud Model
.
Properties of an Electron
Remember when we told you about the way the
Electron Cloud Model
allowed us to have a more
comprehensive
way of describing an electron?

- the higher the number, the more energy it contains
- higher the number, less tightly bound to the nucleus
- it is referred using a letter instead of a numerical value

- describes the shape of the orbital

- refers to the direction of angular momentum vector

- principle quantum number
Erwin Schrodinger's
formula
showed the
probability
of where the electron could be found in a
given region of space
at a
given time
His formula only shows the
possible places
in which an electron can be
found
,
not
where its
actual location
is at a specific
time
.
Max Planck was a German
theoretical physicist
who originated the idea of
quantum theory
and the idea that
energy
traveled in
packets
called
"quanta"
He made many
contributions
towards the field of
Quantum Theory
as well as Quantum Physics, and devised many theories such as
Planck Constant
,
Planck Postulate
, and
Planck's Law of Black Body Radiation
Describing the Electron Cloud Model
There is a
"cloud"
surrounding the nucleus of the atom. That cloud shows us all the possible
locations
in which the electron might be at any given
time
.
The probability of finding an electron is
greater
within the part of the
"cloud"
that is
most dense
, and there is
less chance
of finding an electron in the l
ess dense
part of the
"cloud"
The
Electron Cloud Model
eventually led to a new
concept
of sub-energy levels called the
"Electron Configuration"

is a better way to describe the electrons

and

in an atom
Plancks Constant
The
Plancks Constant
shows the
behaviour
of particles and waves on an
atomic
level

energy packets
called
"quanta"

The
Electron Configuration
is separated into
7
different
"energy levels"
and each level has its own set of descriptions
[s, p, d, f]
to show the
shape
of the orbital

It was thought that the electron
emitted electromagnetic radiation
continuously because the electron was always
accelerating
in a spiral path. However, the
loss of energy
meant that the electron would spiral into the nucleus in a short time - meaning
atoms could not exist
Planck challenged this theory by developing a formula called the
Plancks Constant
.
A Team Effort

Albert Einstein
used Planck's theories and constant to develop his own theories and work
[Photoelectric Effect]
Niels Bohr
used his research to develop a more accurate model of the atom called the
"Bohr Model"
- which explained how the electron
"jumped"
from a
lower
energy level to a
higher
energy level
Because of his work, humanity was able to develop things like
lasers
,
transistors
and
electron microscopes
By developing the
theory
that energy traveled in groups called
"quanta"
, he sparked a new field of science called
"Quantum Physics"
