- without a mental picture of some real-life situation,
the message has no bearing on their lives

What does the CIS (take-home truth) look like in real life?
Making the Message Relevant - How?
- picture some person, event, or circumstance in
their everyday world where the biblical truth would
have some bearing
Step #1: Think where it would show up in
your own life.
How have I experienced this?
- visualize the different kinds of people you’ll be
talking to
Step #2: Run the truth through the various
groups and life circumstances
- ask: What does someone in each category need to
think about or deal with?
Step #3: Develop mental pictures that apply the
biblical concept
(not only illustrate)
- Bill's witness in court - an application of courage
- Be a good Christian
Step #4: Make your applications detailed and
extended, not vague and brief.
- teaching a fifth grade boys Sunday school class
Step #2: Run the truth through the various groups
and life circumstances

Illustrations don’t help the listener to see how it shows up in their lives.
