Transcript of Genetics and Heredity Vocabulary

PHENOTYPE
Physical
Trait you can see.
brown eyes, red hair, dark/light skin, hairy toes, ability to curl tongue, etc
GENOTYPE IS REPRESENTED BY CAPITAL AND LOWER CASE LETTERS CALLED ALLELLES.
Genes
dominant allele
represented by CAPITAL LETTER

DOMINANT means STRONG

If dominant allele is present in gene, it will show the trait.
ALLELE
You get one allele from each parent for each trait.
Genetics and Heredity Vocabulary
GENOTYPE
GENETIC
information codes on DNA for traits.

ex: Xx, AA, bb
Represented by letters
genotype and phenotype
Heredity
the passage of genetic instructions from one generation to the next.
DNA
deoxyribonucleic acid

carrier of genetic information
for traits such as eye color.
A gene is a section of DNA that codes a unit of heredity such as hair color.
chromosome- made up of DNA. found in nucleus of cells. Each organism has a set number of chromosomes. ex: humans- 46
ALLELLE
CODES IN GENES ON CHROMOSOMES
AA

XX- FEMALE
XY- MALE
BB
Bb

B
Recessive Allele
b
represented by lower case letter.

trait will show only when both alleles are lowercase or recessive.

bb
AA (two dominant alleles)
(dominant trait shows)

Aa (1 dominant allele: 1 recessive allele)
(dominant trait shows)

aa (two recessive alleles)
(recessive trait shows)
HOMOZYGOUS
"homo"- same
BB or bb
Heterozygous
"hetero"- different
Bb
brown eyes (B) are dominant to blue eyes (b).
BB =
Bb =
bb =
