Why French is spoken in La Nouvelle Calédonie

It's been a French territory since 1853 which means, of course, as with the rest of the Republic, French is the official language; all government, administration, education is conducted in French. Not to mention that the native population has declined since the arrival of the French and, before them, the English! The Melanesian-Polynesian languages are still spoken but do not have official status.
