The 7 Steps to Writing Success

Chunk it out!
Overview: Jen McVeity says the way to teach writing is how to coach tennis. First you learn forehand, then backhand, then serve. Doing this in small steps builds up muscle memory. The same with writing, it's such a huge ask to get students to do it all at one time.

The Seven Step are;
Step 1: Plan for Success
Step 2: Sizzling Starts
Step 3: Tightening Tension
Step 4: Dynamic Dialogue
Step 5: Show, Don't Tell
Step 6: Ban the Boring
Step 7: Endings with Impact

Relate narratives and persuasives to movies, stories, jokes or ads. Things that students already know and can identify the features of the piece of writing. E.g. The Sizzlings start, back fill, tightening tension, dynamic dialogue, show - don't tell.
Story graph helps students plan (see clip of Bill)
Step 2:
Sizzling Starts Activity
Student Work and Sample Lessons
Student Testimonials
