This is What I Call Fun The first chapter name is 'How to Get Jumped Without Really Trying?' This was chosen as the name because in the first chapter, Ponyboy is jumped while he is walking home from the movies. The Assailants, a group of Socs, grabbed Ponyboy and offered him a 'haircut.' They asked Ponyboy, "How'd you like that haircut to begin just below the chin?" (Hinton 5) In Chapter Two, Dally, Ponyboy, and Johnny go to the nightly double, a viewing of two movies in a row at the drive-in movie theater. There, they meet Cherry, a Soc. Dally tries to get Cherry to go out with him, but Cherry tells him NO and stands up to Dally. Dally walks away angry because he could not get a date. In this chapter, Ponyboy and Johnny are attacked in the park. One of the Socs, David, tries to drown Ponyboy, so Johnny killed Bob, another Soc. Then, Ponyboy and Johnny ran to Buck Merril's house to find Dally. Dally gives Ponyboy and Johnny a gun, a wad of money, a place to go, and instructions to hop on a train and ride it for one stop to get to the place that Dally. The Place is a church on Jay Mountain. Johnny and Ponyboy fell asleep on the floor. The chapter is named 'This is What I Call Fun' to make fun of the gangs daily activities of fighting, getting jumped, and smoking all three of which occur in this chapter. Churches are the best hideouts In chapter five, Ponyboy and Johnny live at the church. Ponyboy reads Gone With The Wind to Johnny to pass the time. After a week, Dally visits them and brings a letter from Sodapop. Then Dally, Ponyboy, and Johnny go out to eat a good meal. Chapter Six
Ah, My Hair is on Fire During this chapter, Johnny, Dally, and Ponyboy drive back to the church to find it on fire, with two adults and a group on little kids screaming out front of it because there was a group of little kids still in the church. Despite Dally telling them not to, Johnny and Ponyboy run into the church and end up rescuing the little kids. But, Johnny gets hit in the back by a falling roof timber. Ponyboy ends up in the waiting room in the hospital, waiting for Johnny. There he meets up with Sodapop and Darry. The title of the chapter is 'Ah, My Hair is on Fire' because when you walk into a church that is on fire, your hair can catch fire. Cover of The Outsiders Most of the covers that The Outsiders were published under included a picture of Ponyboy and usually a picture of Johnny because they are the main characters and symbols of the book. The title of the book is The Outsiders. It refers to both of the gangs, the Greasers and the Socs. Both groups are loners or people who do not fit into society. The only group of people they fit into is their gang. These people live outside society and outside the law The title of the book is The Outsiders. There's a First Time for Everything During chapter three, Ponyboy starts to walk ot Two-bit's house to pick up his car so the girls could drive home. On the way, the Socs that jumped Ponyboy drive up to them and demand that Cherry and Marcia get in the car. Then, when Ponyboy goes home, Darry yells at him and hits him because he got home too late and they had no margin for error if Darry, Sodapop, and Ponyboy wanted to stay together. It was the first time that Ponyboy had a girl he could talk to. It was the first time that a Soc associated with a greaser. And, it was the first time that Darry ever hit Ponyboy.
