Transcript of Internet Safety
Instant Messenger (IM) is a great way of chatting with your mates, and the reason it’s so popular is its private, so only the people involved can see what’s being said.
When a message is sent, it appears on the screen almost immediately, so it’s like having a real conversation. In IM, you can keep track of your mates using a contact list and this list shows when they are online the same time as you, so you can see who you can talk to. You can use webcams when you are logged onto IM, and this is great fun as it means you can see your mates while you are talking to them HOW TO STAY SAFE IF SOMEONE YOU DON'T KNOW ADDS YOU, YOU SHOULD DELETE AND BLOCK THEM STRAIGHT AWAY!
IF SOMEONE YOU ADD DOESN'T TURN OUT VERY NICE, DON'T WORRY! YOU CAN ALWAYS DELETE THEM TOO!
DON'T REVEAL TOO MUCH ON YOUR PROFILE, ANYWAY WHO WOULD WANT TO HEAR YOU HAVE KISSED YOUR MUM, CHEESY!!!!!!
PUT A PICTURE OF A FOOTBALL OR SOMETHING ECXEPT YOUR AND YOUR FRIENDS FACE. WHO WOULD WAN'T TO SEE YOUR UGLY MUG!!!
Some people will try and speak to young people using IM because they have bad intentions, and they can fake webcam images and pretend to be someone else to try and trick you. If you feel worried about this, make sure you tell to a trusted adult or report to thinkuknow.
Look out for this icon on other websites. This means that you can report abuse directly to CEOP from those sites. For example, MSN Live Messenger has a tab with this icon on it.
Mobiles are a great way to stay in touch, but phones have loads of other functions.
