1967 - First teaching position, Maine
1968 - Manhattan - doubled salary!
1970 – 3 years in industry – 1st introduction to computers - EDP
1981 – First to desktop computer @ home - IBM
1988 - Back to the high school classroom - 10 yrs. - Apple IIe
1991 - First able to have Internet in classroom - water project
1998 - Director of Educational Technology @ LU, using both
Macs and PCs - also work with secondary majors

Believing that teachers should no longer have the right to refuse the use of current technologies.....

Initial studies were done spring 2007 - fall 2009
Student surveys, asking comfort levels or experiences with various technologies
Small surveys n = 10 to 20
Surveys included both graduate & ungraduate students, as well as students enrolled in Adult Studies program

Our Findings
Comfort Level of Adult Studies Students, at the beginning of the semester
"The student will further develop technology skills
that facilitate student instruction and learning.
This course will cover a considerable number of e-learning tools with social capabilities as well as abilities to engage students in quality collaborative projects. Additionally, research will be done to determine the latest developments and trends in the use of the Internet in the classroom. Although this course may be taken fully online, instruction will also be available in the technology lab for students who prefer not to take the course online." - catalog description
"One of the major challenges in educational technology is its ever-changing nature. This course is designed to maximize the knowledge of current candidates and to promote inquiry into new uses of technology through class interaction. Topics for discussion could include but not be limited to effective use of classroom devices, use of vendor programs, security issues and challenges, laptop
initiatives, social networking/podcasts/webinars, online staff development, maximizing limited resources and dependence on technology." - catalog
Spring '09 - test course open to all M.Ed. students - 10 enrolled
Fall '10 - Cohort of ten students began - 12 enrolled

Our students generally need more experiences with technology
Our students acknowledge that they'd like to have more experiences
Some expressed an desire to become leaders in the area of teaching & learning with technology

Can anyone else think of an employment sector other than K-12 and postsecondary education where employees have the right to refuse to use technology? For example, a grocery store checker doesn’t get to say ‘No thanks, I don’t think I’ll use a register.’ A stockbroker doesn’t get to say, ‘No thanks, I don’t think I’ll use a computer.’ An architect doesn’t get to say, ‘No thanks, I don’t think I’ll use AutoCAD.’ But in education, we plead and implore and incentivize but we never seem to require. In many industries, knowledge of relevant technologies is a necessary prerequisite for either getting or keeping one’s job. Sometimes the organization provides training; sometimes the employee is expected to get it on her own. Either way the expectation is that use of relevant technologies is a core condition of employment. Why aren’t our school organizations expecting more of their employees?” - Scott McLeod, January, 2008
