By: Dominik Luthe Peace One Day Peace - (noun)
freedom from disturbance; quiet and tranquility :
mental calm; serenity : Peace Day is a day where there is a global ceasefire and people can take part in a wide-scale community action to support an initiative for a day that provides an opportunity for aid organizations to carry out life-saving work in conflict affected countries. An opportunity that is very rare and very important. SEPTEMBER 21ST - PEACE DAY Jeremy Gilley Jeremy Gilley, the founder and the mind behind Peace One Day, started his career as a professional actor and progressed to creating films, leading to the creation of his company: P.U.R.E Productions. As he stated in the previous video, he began to create a Peace One Day documentary, as he had noticed there was no day of peace and aimed for the UN to formalize the idea. In 2001, it was unanimously voted by the UN member nations to adopt the idea of having a day of global ceasefire and non-violence on the 21st of September every year. My Views On The Importance Of
Peace One Day Example Of A Peace One Day Activity Bibliography 2007:
Travelled to Afganistan, provided 1.4 million children with a polio vaccine along with the help of the WHO and UNICEF. They organized a peace walk, followed by a youth debate on what needs to be done in afganistan for peace to work. Arms handover, ceremonies, prayers for peace, schools painted in white and educational activities. Peace One Day's Achievements 2008:
Travelled once again to Afganistan and organized a press conference to spread awareness and call for action to observe peace day. On that day, there was a 70% drop in security incidents in Afganistan, followed by a pledge by President Karzai for a day of non violence. Along with the WHO and UNICEF once again, they vaccinated 1.6 million children against polio. 2 million more than the previous year. 2009:
This was the year where peace day exploded. The Afghanistani government ordered its forces to stand down, the Taliban agreed to support the peace one day polio immunization drive by the afghan government saying they would not harm the 14,000 workers and volunteers involved in peace day.

Once again, there was a large number of polio immunizations, (1.2 million). Other activities included a concert where over 1,000 people waved flags for peace day, a 2 day cricket camp with 50 disadvantaged children and a 3 day painting workshop for street kids in kabul and there were kite competitions scattered across Afghanistan. 2010:
For the fourth year in a row, they worked to save lives by immunizing over 50,000 children AND women this time. They also launched a nationwide polio campaign to target 8 million children.

There were a larger amount of activities once again including; a football match between two famous footballing teams in the region, establishing a youth football team that was named the "Kunduz Teenagers Peace Team", a concert for Afgani Women, the establishment of a skateboarding school that hosted an event that got together youth and adults to discuss peace and think about how sport can bring people together, and once again President Karzai had made a statement about Peace Day supporting Peace The first, and most obvious way to show your support for Peace One Day would be to go to their official website (Peaceoneday.org) and sign up to their 'Global Truce' to receive the latest info on their efforts. Just 'like' their Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/peaceoneday) to be updated on what they are doing 24/7. If you are not the 'organizer' type of person and do not plan on organizing a huge event for Peace One Day, just getting involved in whatever local events are being held for Peace One Day is enough! In what year did the UN adopt the idea of Peace One Day? It provides hope to people who live in war affected countries, where they are unable to receive aid, as it would be usually to dangerous for aid workers to provide their resources to the people It also provides hope to people around the world that there is a possibility to live in a world without conflict and violence. If we can have peace for a day, why not for the whole year?
