Display type Vs Body type
Display type refers to the use of type at large sizes, perhaps 30 points or larger.
Body type is the specific typeface that is used in the main text.
Functions of Type
Get a reader’s attention and interest. [Readability]
Be easy to read. [Legibility]
Place type on a plain background that contrasts well in value.
Body text = 10 to 12 points
Help the reader scan/organize
Use type consistently
Limit use of fonts
Too many fonts (or typefaces) = jumbled mess.
Use for emphasis, to highlight important points.
Don't overdo it.
Type, Leading and Line length
For long passages, consider type with a large x-height
Leading is a measure of vertical space between lines.
The correct leading is based on the text size.
It is the maximum length of a single line of text before the next word in a sentence ‘wraps’ onto the next line underneath.
How do you want your text to line up?
The empty space between and around the elements of a design or page layout.
Space between columns;
Space between lines of type.
! For pages, make lines between 40 and 70 characters long.
! For screens, reduce the line length to 40-55 characters.
Italics for lengthy passages
Setting multiple lines in capital letters.
