The Promise
The 1989 United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child
"I have rights."
Because Article 42 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child obligates countries who have signed it to actively make the provisions and principles within the Convention available to all children and adults.
They appreciate that all children have a right to a home that is safe and comfortable.
All children have a right to clean drinking water close to home.
All children have a right to enough nourishing food to eat so that they can grow and thrive.
Such as...
Every child has the right to obtain the highest level of health in order to lead a full and active life.
And, education is the right of every child. Education should help children develop their spirituality, talents, and abilities. It should also teach them to respect themselves, other people, and nature.
"I can identify my rights."
"I can share these rights with all children."
"I can act for children's rights."
Every child has a right to have time and somewhere safe to play. All children should be allowed to have privacy if they want to spend some time on their own.

People and Brief History Behind The Convention on the Rights of the Child:
Founded of Save the Children in 1919 with her sister Dorothy
1920 Save the Children was reconstructed to become the International Save the Children Union
23 February 1923, the International Save the Children Union adopted the first version of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child (later to be called the Geneva Convention)
Drafted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child (Geneva Convention) in Geneva in 1923
In the first International Child Welfare congress held in Geneva in 1925, the Declaration of the Rights of the Child was widely discussed and supported by organizations and governments
An expanded version of this Declaration would later be adopted by the United Nations in 1959
The Declaration became one of the main inspirations behind the 1989 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Renown Polish Jewish writer, educator and pediatrician;
Designed and directed a progressive orphanage in Warsaw, Poland in 1911, which was kind-of-a-republic for children with its own small parliament, court, and a newspaper;
Served as a military doctor during the First World War;
During the 1930's he had his own radio program where he promoted and popularized the rights of children;
In 1933 he was awarded the Silver Cross of the Polonia Restitua;
In August 1942 Korczak was transported with 192 of his orphans from the Warsaw Getto to Treblinka extermination camp.

Mid 19th Century
France - the idea emerges to give children special protection, enabling the progressive development of "minors' rights".
1841
Laws start to protect children in the workplace.
Since 1881
French laws include the right for children to be educated.
Beginning of the 20th Century
Children's protection starts to be put into place, including protection in the medical, social, and judicial fields. This kind of protection first starts in France and spreads across Europe.
1919
Following the creation of the League of Nations (later to become the United Nations), the international community starts to give some kind of importance to the concept of children's rights and creates a committee for child protection.
1923
Eglantyne Jebb attends a meeting of the International Union to plan for a Children's Charter, which resulted in the formation of The Declaration of the Rights of the Child, with a purpose to bring the rights of children to the forefront.
26 September 1924
The League of Nations adopts The Declaration of the Rights of the Child and titles it the Geneva Convention:
It is the first international treaty concerning children's rights.
Five chapters gives specific rights to children and responsibilities to adults.
It is based on the work of Janusz Korczak, the Polish physician, educator, and writer.
1947 and then 1953
World War II leaves thousands of children in a dire situation and The UN Fund for Urgency for the Children is created in 1947, which becomes UNICEF in 1953.
1959
The General Assembly of the United Nations adopts the Declaration of the Rights of the Child (Geneva Convention). This document paves the way to a Universal Declaration of Children's Rights.
1979 - The International Year of the Child
Poland makes a proposal to the United Nations to create a working group within the Human Rights Commission to further children's rights.
November 20, 1989
The Convention on the Rights of the Child is adopted unanimously by the UN General Assembly. Its 54 articles describe the economic, social, and cultural rights of children.
How can we make the promise of the Convention a reality for children today?
One of the Convention's key strengths is that it recognizes that children's rights must be actively understood and promoted by adults and children alike if the Convention is ever to become a
reality
for all children.
The Promise of the United Nations 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child can be a
reality
for children if we implement an effective school curriculum that is contextualized within and informed by the Convention.
An integrated curriculum for educators teaching children ages 5-18, Children's Rights Education is intended to empower children to unite together to actively realize the principles and provisions outlined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child for all children.

"Children are not the people of tomorrow, but people today. They are entitled to be taken seriously. They have a right to be treated by adults with tenderness and respect, as equals. A Journey From

Reality
The realization of the 1989 United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child through the application of a quality children's rights education curriculum in the Elementary, Middle, and High School classroom.
It is a human rights treaty that sets out the civil, political, economic, social, health, and cultural rights of children;
It defines a child as any human being under the age of eighteen;
Nations that ratify the Convention are bound to it by international law;
Examination of the Convention's implementation in countries that have ratified it is done by the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child;
Since its adoption by the UN General Assembly on the 20th of November, 1989, 193 countries have ratified the Convention, including every member of the United Nations except Somalia, South Sudan, and the United States.
