Freak the Mighty by: Rodman Philbrick
De Henderson

Summary
These two boys could not be more different, but they quickly become close friends. Surprisingly opposite attract. Freak tries to teach Max about robotics and history, and Max just sort of smiles and nods...
Theme
''Lies and Deceit"
Quotes
1)
Character Analysis
Max Kane ~He calls himself a butthead, a hulk, dumb, brainless, a moron, a butthead a few more times, a goon… This boy has serious self-esteem issues. His problems go much deeper than that.When we first meet Max, he refuses to make a connection with anyone. He distances himself from his grandparents, both emotionally and physically.
Reflection and Take Away
Never judge somebody by how they look, because you never know how they might take something even if you did not mean it in a bad way. I think of this book as a good example of treat others the way you want to be treated. People and animals no matter what can be best friends no matter size or age.
Introduction of theme
One of the quotes on Lies and Deceit would be ''I invented games like kick-boxing and kick-knees and kick-faces and kick-teachers, and kick-the-other-little-day-care-critters, because I knew what a rotten lie that hug stuff was.'' {1.4} {Freak}
Summary of theme
Killer Kane lied by saying he swore on the bible that he wasn't guilty. Kevin lied to Max about his new biotic body. Max is the only character that does not lie in the story. Grim lied about never drinking and about the gun. Gram did not lie. Fair Gwen did not ever lie throughout the story. Loretta & Iggy didn't lie either they actually turned out to be a good help. "Tonight they'll take me down there [...] I'll be new and improved." {23.24} {Freak}
Advancement of theme
Grim is trying to back herself up by saying, "I'm telling tales, my dear, not lies. Lies are mean things, and tales are meant to entertain." {15.16} {Grim}

Quote #2
That's when I got my first look at Freak […] Looking sort of fierce is how I remember him. (1.5) {Max}
If you remember, Max is nicknamed "kicker." So if he's calling Freak fierce, Freak must be one tough boy. And guess what? He sure is.
Also this pertains to me because when some people first look at me they think one thing, then they get to know me then think something different. Just like Kevin!
"I just sit there like a lump until the sun comes up, trying not to think about things I didn't want to remember." (17.55) {Max}
Max has been kidnapped by his dad and now he's locked up in a basement, "trying not to think about things [he] didn't want to think about." Is this the same kind of hiding Max does in the down under?
Also this pertains to my life because when i try not to think about something I don't wanna remember, I just sit there and daydream.
Quote 3
"Now, your grandparents say you're nothing but a dysfunctional retard, but no kin of mine is a retard, and that's a fact." (17.18) {Kenny}
3)
Attitude and criticism aside, what does this comment tell us about Kane's views on family?
This quote pertains to me because people try to tell me things that are not true, just to get me to think a certain way.
Quote 4
4)
Freak is still holding tight to my shoulders and when they ask him for his name, he says, "We're Freak the Mighty, that's who we are." (7.44) {Max}
And Freak the Mighty has came about. Naming their relationship makes the bond closer, because they are a team. They think of each other as a teammate that never leave each others side. And it is a cool way for them to remember themselves.
Also this does not really pertain to my life because I do not really have that type of friend.
Quote 5
5)
"You should hear him talk. I think the rest of him is so small because his brain is so big." (5.25) {Max}
Max jumps to Freak's side, when Grim starts to doubt how smart he is. But we're pretty sure this is more than just standing up for a buddy. Max is confused of Freak's intellect.
Also this pertains to me and my life because this is kind of how I am. I'm very smart but small. And that's a good part of me.
Kevin
{aka~ Freak}
Killer Kane
Even though Killer Kane only rears his evil head for five chapters, his presence spreads large over the whole book. He is the cause of all of Max's problems. He is a murderer.
Freak is a freak for robotics and engineering, of course, but he's also a word nerd. He loves reading and words so much that he actually makes his own personal dictionary. Freak isn't the evil genius type. He's a loving little guy.
Fair Gwen
Fair Gwen is Kevin's mom and is a very beautiful lady. She judges Max by his looks at first, then she tries to apologize for who she reacted to him at first.
Grim & Gram
Every time they look at Max, he reminds them of his father. they are a cute couple!
Loretta & Iggy
Loretta & Iggy were judged by the way the acted and the way they lived. But they really were good people, we figured that out when they both were trying to help Max.
Clips and Songs
Friends are here for you. You just have to find the right one!
