Extended Essay Formatting and Abstract Writing Workshop -
October 21, 2016

It is very important that all Extended Essays use the same format when it comes to Title Pages, Table of Contents, Pagination and Citation.

Failing to do so can lead to the loss of marks under Criterion I. Of the 36 marks, 4 are earmarked for formal presentation. Those should be easy marks....
The Title Page
Your Table of Contents and Abstract will use Roman Numerals as page numbers. While the Title Page is "Page i", it is not labelled. The T.O.C. is numbered as ii and the Abstract as iii (assuming it is one page)

The essay itself uses Arabic Numerals, starting with Page 1.

You'll need to Insert Page Breaks to have different sections of your essay have different styles of Pagination.
The Abstract
Ok, writing the Abstract seems really daunting. We get that.

However, if you take a formulaic approach, you can't screw this up.

Remember that the Abstract is worth 2 marks out of 36.
All Title Pages at Laurier
will look alike. No exceptions...

The title of your essay should be centred.
All of This information should be aligned right and be at the bottom of your page.
Times New Roman, Size 12, single spaced for your Title Page
Page Numbers are on the right for each section.
Each section of your Essay should be broken down
and labelled with descriptive headings in the Table of Contents.

These headings should not actually be inserted in the essay itself.
Notice that the Title is centred.
Don't forget the word count! they will look for this.
Essential elements of the abstract are:
Maximum word count 300 words – This is a hard cap
Three paragraph format

1st Paragraph
• 75 to 100 words in length
• Must include the Research Question & Thesis
• Must outline the purpose and method of the paper

2nd Paragraph
• 100 to 125 words in length
• Cover the scope of the investigation
• Detail limits and boundaries of your research
• What are you going to prove in your EE
• Outline key resources consulted

3rd Paragraph
• 50 to 75 words
• Outline the conclusion reached in your EE

What it looks like

How it's evaluated
2 points - The abstract clearly states all the elements listed above.

0 points - The abstract exceeds 300 words or one or more of the required
elements of an abstract (listed above) is missing.
1 point - The abstract contains the elements listed above but they are
not all clearly stated.
The requirements for the abstract are for it to state clearly the research question that was investigated, how the investigation was undertaken and the conclusion(s) of the essay.
The 1st page of the essay switches back to Arabic numerals and is reset to Page 1.
Try to avoid the use of headings in the essay.
The Table of Contents
Pagination for the Essay itself
Page Numbers are on the right for each section.
Notice that the Title is centred.
Don't forget the word count! they will look for this.
