Transcript of Understanding the General Structure at The Ohio State University

The Ohio State University Structure
A tutorial for students and parents
The Ohio State University
is like the
United States
:
The
University
is comprised of
Colleges.
The
Colleges
are equivalent to
States
in the
US
.
Map from Wikipedia
Each
College
contains individual Schools. Schools are like Counties in a
State.
Each

School

has
Departments
within it, like
each
County

has
Cities
within it.

Map from Wikipedia
Each

Department

offers
Majors
to study, just like each

City

offers
Neighborhoods
to live in.
Some

Majors

contain
tracks
or
specializations
,
like

the
specific street
you live on in a
neighborhood
.

Good luck!
We are happy to have you :)

Just like each
State
has its own laws
(taxes, education, capital punishment)
,
each
College
has its own rules
(GEs, credits to graduate, types of advising)
Counties
&
States
have their own laws, but Federal laws take precedence. This is true for
Schools
&
Colleges
at OSU.
Each
City
takes over some governmental responsibilities that make managing a
County
more efficient.
Departments
do the same thing in a
School.
For many students,
Majors
provide a sense of identity; this is level of the University that they will interact with the most. This is also where they will find other students with similar interests to socialize with, so
Majors
can provide a feeling of community. In a
Major,
instructors & advisors can get to know a student as an individual.
Majors
can help students feel connected or challenged by offering research & internship opportunities.
