Fake and Real Love
If love isn't God's Love . . .
It isn't Genuine Love
The Heart of Showing our Need
“37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”
The Heart of Showing God's Glory
“6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
The Heart that is Transformed
1 John 4:7-8
“7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.” Love is a sign, a symptom, an indicator of a person that has been saved.
“22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” Love coming out of a person shows that they have been transformed. You cannot have a loving sinner and you cannot have a Believer who does not love.
“9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.”
The Heart that Feels and Does
The Heart that Imitates
1 John 4:16-21
“16 So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 17 By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. 19 We love because he first loved us. 20 If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.”
1 Corinthians 13:4-7
"4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things."
A Holy Spirit Enabled and Empowered Response to the Love of God that imitates His Love back to Him and to others.
"Love is willing self-sacrifice for the good of another that does not require reciprocation or that the person being loved is deserving.” - Tripp
Hating Evil and Clinging to Good
“O you who love the Lord, hate evil! He preserves the lives of his saints; he delivers them from the hand of the wicked.”
“14 Seek good, and not evil, that you may live; and so the Lord, the God of hosts, will be with you, as you have said. 15 Hate evil, and love good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the Lord, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.”
Genuine Love is a Love that is True to the Work of the Spirit
Genuine Love is Responding
to God's Love
How is what you are doing a response to what God has done for you?
How is it intentional, sacrificial, initiating, communicating, and serving?
How is it humble, born out of a deep awareness of the love He has shown you and your unworthiness of this love?
How is it grateful for the opportunity to love Him and others?
Genuine Love is
Self-Denying and Self-Sacrificing
Does this seek to protect you in what you are or are not doing and saying?
How do you respond when that communication, service, sacrifice, or work is unrewarded, met with ingratitude, or rejected?
How has love compelled you in the life of the church, your home, or work in the last month to sacrifice your preference, desire, or opinion for the sake of loving someone else? Was it with joy?
Genuine Love is Spirit Controlled
What text of Scripture ruled over that communication or action?
How did you go about being ruled by the Spirit through the Word with what you chose to do so that you ensured it was loving?
How are you seeking to be trained to love biblically and genuinely?
