Born the week before the 26th Amendment was added to the Constitution.
CHILDHOOD
Elon Musk was born to a Canadian mother and an English-born South African father.

Elon taught himself computer programming, and at age 12 sold the code for the popular game "Blastar" for $500.
FAMILY
Elon has one brother, Kimbal Musk, and one sister, Tosca Musk.
At age 17, Elon graduated from Pretoria Boys High School and moved to Canada. He moved to avoid service in the South African military. A Canadian citizenship would make it easier to emigrate to the United States.
After 2 years in Ontario, Musk moved transferred to the University of Pennsylvania and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business, and a Bachelor of Science in Physics.
Elon then moved to California to obtain a degree in applied Physics at Stanford but left the program 2 days later to pursue his entrepreneurial aspirations.
EARLY BUSINESS VENTURES
The Musk brothers started a software company called Zip2. The company developed an internet guide to cities for the newspaper industry, including lucritive contracts with the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune.

Compaq bought Zip2 for $307 million in 1999.
Elon recieved $22 million.
In March 1999, Elon founded X.com, and the next year merged with Confinity to create PayPal.

The creators of Yelp, YouTube, and LinkedIn all worked with Musk at PayPal.


Musk favored his original brand of X.com to PayPal, and after making PayPal a subdomain of X.com he moved to officially remove the PayPal brand. Following this, he was removed as CEO by the board.
When PayPal was bought by eBay for $1.5 billion, Musk received $165 million.
Elon Musk founded Space Exploration Technologies, his third company in 2002.

SpaceX develops and manufactures space vehicles. The company's first two vehicles are the Falcon 1 and Falcon 9 rockets, and it's first spacecraft is the Dragon.
SPACEX
SpaceX was awarded a $1.6 billion NASA contract for 12 flights of the Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft to resupply the ISS.

On May 25, 2012 the Dragon docked with the ISS, making history as the first commercial company to dock a vehicle to the space station.
Elon was influenced by Isaac Asimov's Foundation series, and views expansion into space necessary for human development and preservation.

Musk's long term goal is to send astronauts to Mars within 10-20 years.
TESLA MOTORS
Musk co-founded his 4th company, Tesla Motors, and has served as CEO and product architect since 2008.

Tesla Motors first car was the Tesla Roadster, selling 2,500 vehicles in 31 countries.
Tesla Motors is currently developing an electric sedan and a minivan set to release in 2014.
Musk says that the company is moving towards affordability and overcoming the limitations of electric vehicles.

In 2013, Tesla tripled the number of electric "supercharger stations" across the East and West coast, with plans for further expansion into Canada.

Musk and his cousin co-founded SolarCity, the largest provider of solar power systems in the United States.
Musk has proposed a new form of transportation called the Hyperloop. The Hyperloop would be a subsonic air travel machine that would use a partial vacuum to reduce drag, and allow the system to travel at speeds of 700 miles per hour with relatively low power. Musk proposed that it could run completely on solar power.
Musk's martian ambitions include plans for a "Mars Oasis". The plan would land a miniature experimental greenhouse on Mars, containing food crops growing on martian soil. He intends to transform humanity into a spacefaring civilizatio with SpaceX.
Elon Musk's net worth is almost $8.8 billion today.

He is the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla Motors, as well as chairman of SolarCity.

Elon is the father of 5 sons.
