The Science of Stress Chapter 3 1. Describe the human fight-or-flight response to stress.
2. List the physiological changes associated with the stress response.
3. Identify the stages of the general adaptation syndrome.
4. Explain how the science of stress relates to stress management and prevention Objectives: -More is known about the physiology and psychology of stress than ever before The Science of Stress -Why do you feel stress in the first place? Stress and the Big Bear -After an initial awareness of danger --> automatic physiological processes take place immediately. Fight-or-Flight Response Outline-C -There's an automatic reaction to stress. -Harvard physiologist, Walter Cannon, termed "fight-or-flight" to describe our body's automatic response when we perceive threat/danger. -The FOF response give strength, power, and speed to overcome physical harm. -Helps us do one thing: SURVIVE. Physiological Response to Stress -Upon the initiation of stress, immediate and powerful changes occur due to the activation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) ANS's Responsibilities:
1. Digestion
'2. Heart Rate
3. Blood Pressure
4. Temperature 2 Branches of the ANS are Designed to Regulate the FOF Response: 1. Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) -Initiates the FOF response each time we have a thought of potential danger 2. Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS) -Branch of NS designed to return the physiology to a state of homeostasis Hypothalamus: -Controls the ANS & is located in the central portion of the brain -Key in stress response bc it is the central region for the integration of the sympathetic and parasympathetic activities -Alarm system Hypothalamus Delivers Messages: -Sends message to endocrine system -Produces adrenalin and releases cortisol (creates power & speed) Effects of FOF Response on Normal Functioning: -Immune system suppressed
-Blood vessels constrict
-Reproductive systems stop working
-Digestive system stops metabolizing food normally
-Excretory system turns off
-Saliva dries up
-Pain perception decreases We don't need these functions! Stress in Today's World: -Our bodies react the same way to threats (real or perceived), in society, although the stressor doesn't require FOF -FOF is inappropriate to today's social stresses -Our bodies are unable to distinguish between life-threatening or mundane sources of stress What types of stress do we encounter today that is less than life-threatening? -Our FOF response is an outdated mechanism that our systems have not yet adapted to. Acute Stress: Chronic Stress: -Occasionally immediate energy is helpful when we're in danger -Our body gives us feedback with varying signals General Adaptation Syndrome: "The process in which the body tries to adapt to chronic stress." 1. Alarm Stage- when a stressor occurs, FOF takes place

2. Stage of Resistance- if the stressor continues, the body mobilizes its internal resources to return to homeostasis, but bc of perception of threat, complete homeostasis is not achieved

3. Stage of Exhaustion- if stress continues long enough, the body can no longer function normally The Stress Response & You FIT:
F= Frequency
I= Intensity
T= Time Myths About Stress: 1. In an ideal world, there would be no stress.

2. What is stressful to me is stressful to you.

3. Only unpleasant situations are stressful.

4. No symptoms, no stress.
