Islam John, Rachel, Tim Fastest Growing Religion in the world. 0.7 to 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide. 1.1 to 7 million in the U.S. Estimates say that by 2050, it'll be the biggest religion in the world. Christianity is the most widely practiced religion currently. 33 percent of the world are Christian. By 2050, Islam will be more widely practiced. Islam Is the name of the religion. Muslims Are people who practice Islam. Muslims Believe In One God Allah Allah Sent Prophets to Earth Jesus, Abraham, and Moses The darker the blue, the denser the Muslim population. The darkest color is 90-100%. The Muslim religion is 1,400 Years old. Muslims believe that Islam has always existed, but they date the origin to Muhammad's pilgrimage to Mecca. The Islamic Holy Book is the Qur'an The Islam faith is based on FIVE Pillars Iman Salah Zakat Sawm Hajj Prayer Faith Charity Fasting Pilgrimage (Shahadah) There is no God but God and
Muhammad is the Messenger of God. Complete acceptance and total commitment to Islam Pray five times a day. Dawn, Noon, Mid-Afternoon,
Sunset, and Evening. Face Mecca. Community welfare. Almsgiving. 2.5% of an individual's total worth. Sawm is a period of fasting ordained by the Qur'an.
It's a period of deep, personal worship seeking
a richer perception of God. Fasting during the month of Ramadan It also helps increase sensitivity to poverty. No eating, drinking or sensual pleasure from sunrise to sunset. Ramadan is a joyful month, ending in a three day feast called "Eid Al-Fitr." There's extra nighttime worship, called tarawih. Pilgrimage to Makkah, or Mecca. Once in a lifetime duty for Muslims who are physically and financially able. Follows the order of ritual that Muhammad did on his last pilgrimage. Tradition: Hajj is neat because it's so peaceful. Courtesy and helping others is a big part of it. It's the largest annual gathering of humans on Earth, and there's no altercations. Some facts about Muslims Muslims can't eat pork, gelatin, or drink alcohol.

Because Islam is from the Arab culture, a lot of Muslims adopt Arab customs.

As far as language goes, there's Muslims all over the world. It's centralized in the Middle East (speak Arabic) but American Muslims are likely to speak English, for example. They don't have a central language. AL-JABR = ALGEBRA
TA'RIF = TARIFF Arabic Words that entered Western Language Thoughts on Education Then exalted be Allah the True King! And hasten not (O Muhammad) with the Qur'an ere its revelation hath been perfected unto thee, and say: My Lord! Increase me in knowledge. -Qur'an 20:114 Muslims value education. The Qur'an says to. Islamic scholars preserved the sciences of Greece and Rome. They wrote stuff down, modified it, critiqued it, preserved it, etc. It was a huge service to the modern scientific community. Muslim scholars had theories on light and space and celestial influence on Earth's motion way before Newton's time. Do you hate Algebra? Algebra was developed in the Islamic culture.

Chemistry (and physics) was also largely influenced by Islam; they made the word for it!

History and art was also important. Poetry and music were ways to tell stories from city to city. Remember, God tells the Muslims to learn and expand their knowledge from birth to death. Algebraic Good News?!? Don't hate, appreciate.

Muslims are credited with the creation
of "zero," even though it's Hindu in origin.

They also made the numbers 1-9, moving
away from I, V, X, L, C, D, M. 4:12 http://www.mei.edu/content/islamic-civilization Family Basics Thank goodness. Building of Muslim society. BLOCKS The father is the head of the family. Extended family and multigenerational
homes are common. This is becoming less common. Islam discourages contraception and encourages large families, but that doesn't always happen. Marriage is the sole basis for sexual relations and parenthood. Taking care of older generations is
considered a blessing. Roles of Women vs. Men Men are the "breadwinners." They take this very seriously, even if their wife makes more money. This can stress out tight-knit families. Women cover themselves. Physical contact between men and women out of marriage is discouraged. Kind of works to eliminate illicit relationships. Of course there are exceptions like medical
reasons. But often times, Muslims see same-sex doctors. Muslim Sexism? They have to wear those black outfits! They need liberated! STOP. It's called a and what other culture can we think of that has gender inequities? Hijab Actually, on the contrary. Marriage is a HUGE deal in Islam. First off: Not all of them. Some sects are more strict. Second off: babasteve
from Flickr. The hijab helps prevent
illicit relationships. Some American women might find it liberating Imagine how much more time you would have if you didn't have to try and look pretty for EVERYONE. Of course there is still plenty of inequality. Everyone still has a long way to go. But see it from a different perspective. Islam is a [culturally] rich culture. A lot of our sense of justice is just us trying to push our culture's values onto a different culture with different values. Muhammad Stereotypes Generalizations Conclusive Insightful Modifiable Show similarities of a group of similar people. Concrete All members of a group are the same. Dimensions of Stereotypes Book http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1071164/ Warmth Abilities Is this group of people going to hurt me or help me? and Help? Warm.
Hurt? Cold. Intelligence,
work ethic,
creativity, competence, ability. http://home.gwu.edu/~jsides/muslims.pdf Hurtful Stereotype: Muslims hate Americans. Wrong. Some Muslims might. But I bet there's at least a handful who really like America. See how that sounds so concrete? Is this group going to hurt me? [Warmth] Hurtful Stereotype: Muslims are a backwards people. Wrong. Not all are. Most probably aren't. A lot are influential doctors. And what does it even mean to be "backwards?" {Abilities] It's grouping ALL Muslims into a radical group. It's giving Muslims a damaging stigma that ISN'T NECESSARILY FACT BASED. It's also making a more familiar culture look more appealing (by implying that Americans aren't hateful), which is often the objective of a stereotype. Agree with those
stereotypes? Recognize there's probably some truth behind a stereotype. But recognize that stereotypes are often unfair and hurtful. What's a stereotype that views Americans that might be hurtful? It's not often someone just makes blatant lies about an entire race. Europeans stereotype
Americans. Americans are all obese. Yep. Some are. Probably more than Europeans. But I can think of AT LEAST skinny Americans. Can you see how that could be offensive? are much kinder. They don't group an entire group of people into an extreme. Allows for growth, new knowledge and exceptions. A stereotype doesn't Black people are lazy. Some probably are. But there's lazy white people as well. At least equally so, I would say. But ALL black people? Really? That's too extreme. Let's look at some. Photo by Alan Light Tell Oprah she didn't work hard. I dare you. Do we understand why stereotypes are bad? They don't apply to everyone. "Softer." Generalizations Six (6) Let's redo that last one. Many black people are born into poverty and learn to be dependent on welfare. "Many black people are born into poverty and learn to be dependent on welfare." It's not saying that all black people fall into this group. It's not even saying that "most" do. It's not calling anyone lazy. It's useful; a black student MIGHT have way more serious things happening in his life than school, like if he's going to have dinner. Think we're ready to make our own useful generalization about Muslims? Based on what you've learned, what are a couple? Men in Muslim families are expected to provide almost exclusively, so they likely endure different stresses than women. The Muslim religion takes education very seriously. A Muslim child is likely to place a high priority on her education. Based on fact.

Allows for exceptions. Based on fact.

Allows for exceptions. Understand
generalizations? vargas2040 from Flickr So I have a Muslim student in my class. How can I teach him most effectively? Individually as a teacher: Pronounce his name right.

If he doesn't speak English well, speak slowly so he understands.

Show initiative and include him in everything.

Learn about Islam as much as you can so you don't offend him by accident.

Be the ultimate model of acceptance for your other students. Slowly is not loudly. DO NOT start yelling English at him like he's dumb. Arab names can sound unusual compared to English names and be long. Find out how to pronounce it right and make sure you do it. Not tolerance. Go a step further. ACCEPTANCE. See the last point. Read books, talk to friends. Do everything you can to make sure he's comfortable. Ask him if there's anything else you could do, especially if he's older and knows what to expect. For your students as a teacher: Teach that all human beings are people with the same rights and privileges as anyone else.

Differences are differences. One thing doesn't make someone better or worse than anyone else.

Don't allow criticism or judgement. That defeats the purpose of a culturally responsive classroom.

Be the ultimate model of acceptance for your other students. What are some assets of having diverse students in a classroom? A lot of Americans have a negative
outlook on Muslims for many reasons. Are all Muslims terrorists?

Do they all run little convenience stores? OBVIOUSLY NOT! No, these are negative stereotypes Having a Muslim in the classroom might help to alleviate some of the social tension early on. When kids are young, they're easily influenced. The stereotypes haven't been learned yet. So they'll have no problem being a Muslim's friend. In turn, that can influence adults in the household. As long as you as a teacher model acceptance to your students, they will be likely to be accepting of different cultures. Tearing Down Walls with Children. Meet Abdul Abdul moved to the U.S. from Saudi Arabia with his family when he was 3 years old.

He's now 17. Diet: No pork Attitude: Great Language: Bilingual Parents: Traditional Education: High priority Friends: Average American Likes: Rock music, Boy Scouts, baseball, American cars. Sources:
