Transcript of Spongebob

Formed by Freud
Id- The pleasure principle, satisfies basic needs and desires.
Ego- The mediator between personal needs, social needs and outside reality.
Superego- Develops over time and formed by ideals acquired from society and surrounding environment.
Model of the Mind
Exposing Bikini Bottom:

Patrick is the Id personified.
He operates only on impulse.
He has no long term goals, no patience, and lives for his present needs.
It is difficult for him to function due to his reckless and impulsive behavior.
The Id Explored:
Patrick Star
Spongebob is the Ego personified.
Unlike Patrick, Spogebob can see past his immediate desires, functions effectively in the real world, has long term goals, and thinks about his future.
He approaches situations with a sense of reality.
The Ego: Spongebob
Squidward is the Supergo personified.
He puts extreme importance on culture: playing clarinet, and his love of art and dance.
He shows the mature/moral part of society, especially for Bikini Bottom.
Squidward cares about realistic topics such as money.
Constantly ridiculing other characters for their lack of moral judgement and intellectual capacity.
Superego: Squidward
Spongebob's Influences
Ego absorbs the character values of surrounding or powerful influences
When Spongebob is around Patrick, he is only concerned with his basic needs and desires, he ends up doing more stupid things
When Spongebob is around Squidward, he tries to emulate his values and sophistication.
Additional Model of the Mind Examples
Id: Anchovies, nematodes, Larry the Lobster
Superego: Sandy Cheeks and Squilliam Fancyson
