KOLKATA WAS DIVIDED INTO TWO PARTS
By the 1850s, Calcutta had two areas: White Town, which was primarily British and centred on Chowringhee; and Black Town, mainly Indian and centred on North Calcutta. The city underwent rapid industrial growth starting in the early 1850s, especially in the textile and jute industries; this encouraged British companies to massively invest in infrastructure projects, which included telegraph connections and Howrah railway station.
Why Kolkata is called the City of Joy?

The name of the book called ‘City of Joy, was authored by Dominique Lapierre who is a French national. This book is written by him describing Kolkata in India. Due to this book Kolkata came to be known as City of Joy. They were visualized by the writer to be living happily amidst poverty.In his book decribes the povertyof the indians .
