Active learning is an

There are hundreds of strategies that can be used at any stage
of the lesson for any purpose with any topic, with all students' grades and levels.

Give clear instructions.
Start from the first day of class and stick with it. Students will come to expect active learning and perform better.
Explain to the class why you are using active learning and highlight what students have to gain from such activities.
Request students vary their seating arrangements to increase their chances to work with different people.
Randomly call on pairs to share and break students in groups.
Use questions from in class activities on tests
Find a colleague or two to plan with (and perhaps teach with) while you're implementing active learning activities.
Develop a plan for an active learning activity, try it out, collect feedback, then modify and try it again.
Continue learning through workshops, reading, and practice.

Active learning is a process whereby students engage in activities, such as reading, writing, discussion, or problem solving that promote analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of class content.
Active learning is a model of instruction that focuses the responsibility of learning on learners.
Active learning is a student centered approach in which the responsibility for learning is placed upon the student, often working in collaboration with classmates
Active Learning is anything that students do in a classroom other than merely passively listening to an instructor's lecture.
