Students will be exposed to the local community.

Students will learn more about the community as well as other resources on campus that will help them eat healthier and develop healthier eating habits.
Students will be able to purchase fresh food which may not be available to them on a regular basis through the SU food services (cafes, dining halls etc.).
The weather DEFINITELY will not be able to hold this program outside during the winter months so we need to find an indoor venue on campus.
Funding: we need to set up a payment plan with Syracuse University and the farmers or other participants that ensures the vendors get paid.
Farmers and other participants may not be willing to work with the idea of a payment plan, they may want the money upfront.
Students who live in dorms may not have enough storage or any storage place for fresh foods/produce.
Finding local farmers that are willing to participate.

Research done at Tufts University in Medford, Mass done on daily calorie intake for the students and their daily activities
Preliminary results of the Tufts Longitudinal Health Study of 1,800 students show:
Most students did not gain the "freshman 15," but college men gained an average of 5.5 pounds their freshman year, and college women gained an average 4.5 pounds.
66% of freshmen don't consume the recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables a day.
50% of all students don't get enough fiber (25 grams a day).
60% eat too much artery-clogging saturated fat.
30% of women don't get enough calcium.
59% say they know their diet has gone downhill since they went to college.

The objectives of this study were to examine changes in body weight, body mass index (BMI), body composition, and shape in a group of male and female students over the 4-year college period.
In the initial assessment, participants completed a demographic questionnaire to obtain self-reported information regarding sex, race–ethnicity, birth date, state of permanent residence, and residence location at college. At both assessments, height and body weight, composition, and shape were measured.

An article on college health among students today and how we can improve our daily health routines.
The steps they included to maintain a healthy lifestyle include: eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, daily physical activity, maintaining health check ups and vaccinations, practicing safe sex, smart choices when it comes to alcohol and drugs, getting help if you are stressed or depressed.
All of these choices are made by us if we chose to practice them daily.
It starts with you wanting to make a lifestyle change if you feel you have become overweight or are unhappy with your weight.

Article on College healthy and safety in a nutshell
Reasons students are unhealthy include: unhealthy eating habits, stress, binge drinking, not getting enough sleep, sexually transmitted diseases
Ways to increase healthy lifestyle include: improving eating habits, be active, get enough sleep, maintain mental health and lower stress, quit smoking, avoid substance use, have healthy relationships, prevent sexually transmitted diseases.

Study that found college students are not getting enough fruits and vegetables daily.
It states that some students are only receiving ONE serving per day which is far from the recommended five servings per day.
Study was done at Oregon State University
Researched 582 college students, majority which were first year students
"We found that students skipped meals fairly frequently, which could account for some of the lack of fruits and veggies," said Brad Cardinal, a professor of exercise and sport science at Oregon State University and one of the study's authors.
In conclusion, both males and females were consuming more than 30 percent of their calories from fat, which exceeds the American Dietetic Association's recommendation of no more than 30 percent a week which shows that the average students reaches for an item with more fat rather than a piece of fruit or vegetables.
This problem is prevalent among college students and actions need to be taken to health reduce this problem.
