* Divide into 3 different groups.
* Each group is assigned based on a drawing from a list of 3 themes...
Movie Themes (3 groups)
1. Futuristic: The Fifth Element, Star Trek, Star Wars, etc.
2. Native/Prehistoric: Avatar, Jungle Book, Jurassic Park, etc.
3. Superhero/Comic Book Films: Spiderman, Batman, Avengers, etc.
Chair Build Process
1. Should have seat and back.
2. Made of cardboard (provided)
3. Must hold at least
4. Cannot use tape, staples, nails, string, paperclips, pins, or adhesives (your constraint)
5. Should have look & style that pleases the user.
Creative Team Artistic Process
* Divide into 7 different groups.
* Each group is assigned based on a drawing from a list of 7 themes...
1. Ancient Rome: Gladiator, Julius Caesar, Ben Hur, etc.
2. Fantasy: Lord of the Rings, Hobbit, Harry Potter, etc.
3. Futuristic: The Fifth Element, Star Trek, Star Wars, etc.
4. British Decorative/Embellished: Pride & Prejudice, Emma, Jane Eyre, etc.
5. Tim Burton films: Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas, etc.
6. Native/Prehistoric: Avatar, Jungle Book, Jurassic Park, etc.
7. Superhero/Comic Book Films: Spiderman, Batman, Avengers, etc.
8. Animated/Stop Motion: Disney, Wes Anderson, Pixar films like Toy Story, Shrek, Wall-E, Fantastic Mr. Fox, etc.

Alternative Uses Test
Developed by J.P. Guilford in 1967, the Alternative Uses Test stretches your creativity by giving you two minutes to think of as many uses as possible for an everyday object like a paper clip, coffee mug, or brick.
Find 30 uses for (blank) in 2 minutes...and...GO.
refers to the way the mind generates ideas beyond proscribed expectations and rote thinking -- what is usually referred to "thinking outside the box," and is often associated with creativity.

The test measures divergent thinking across four sub-categories:
Examples below for a paper-clip:
Fluency - how many uses you can come up with
Originality – how uncommon those uses are
(e.g. “router restarter” is more uncommon than “holding papers together”)
Flexibility – how many areas your answers cover
(e.g. cufflinks and earrings are both accessories, aka one area)
Elaboration – level of detail in responses
“keeping headphones from getting tangled up” would be worth more than “bookmark”

Each team should decide upon 3 questions to ask our User (three primary and 2 backup) to determine how to design the "perfect" chair. Make your ONE question count!

Dig Deeper & Define:
* What does our collective data from the 'empathy' phase tell us?
* What patterns emerge?
* What additional questions do we wish we asked?
* Brainstorm qualities and features of the chair that would delight our user.
* Use "Yes...and" instead of "But..."
* BUILD on ideas of others.
* Draw on the diversity of knowledge in your group.
* Embrace constraints.
* Ask stupid questions and contribute crazy ideas!
Let's be clear.
This is NOT what we expect...
Prototype Chair (Individual Activity):
* Using one sheet of card-stock.
* Chair should be approximately 6" tall.
* You are not allowed to use any tape, strings, nails, paperclips, adhesive, etc. Your CONSTRAINT!
* We encourage
prototypes! Think with your hands. Fail fast. Fail often.
Reconvene in groups & ask:
* What have you learned in prototyping?
* What qualities from each chair would you like to keep?
* "Pitch" your ideas to each other. Sell it!
Embrace Diversity of Skills
Dig into the problem.
Look at the history, the context, the objects, and (most importantly) the people involved.
Go deeper and find patterns.
Establish open questions to build on.
Have lots of ideas, good and bad. Embrace divergent thinking.
Ask "stupid" questions, and offer up crazy ideas.
Try some things out.
Make some things.
Fail cheap and fast.
Be open to changes!
Strip your solution down to the essentials, tell the story to others, and try out your ideas.
