Transcript of Introduction to Engineering

What is
STEM
?
Science: The study of the natural world through observation, identification and experiments.

Technology: Making, using and knowing about tools and machines to solve problems.

Engineering: Creating a product to solve a problem using scientific, mathematical and technological knowledge.

Math: Using numbers, symbols and shapes to solve problems and discover relationships.
STEM
Some Engineering Careers

Engineers make our lives better!

Engineers Work to Solve Many Kinds of Problems

An electrical engineer may design a GPS for your vehicle.
A pharmaceutical/chemical engineer may find a cure for disease.
A computer engineer may build a computer the size of your watch.
A mechanical engineer may create a robot to discover water on a planet.
An agricultural engineer may evaluate the effects of global warming on food production.

Engineers use scientific, technological, and mathematical knowledge to solve practical problems.

What Does an Engineer Do?

Wants vs. Needs

Needs
are the essential things that we must have in order to survive.

--> Three types: physical, biological, psychological.

Wants
are the things that aren’t necessary but improve the quality of our lives.

--> Wants are wasteful if your income is limited.

How Are They All Needed to
Create a Product?
