Transcript of Coral Reef Calcification

Coral Reef Calcification What is Coral Reef Calcification, you ask? My fellow classmates, Coral Reef Calcification is when coral absorbs calcium from the water to calcify their skeletons and then their growth increases. Because of global warming the seawater warms, which slows down the calcification rate. When this happens the coral reefs' growth rate slows down. Equation:
2HCO3 + Ca --> CaCO3 + CO2 + H2O

2 hydrogen
2 carbon
6 oxygen
1 calcium Reactants:
Bicarbonate
Calcium

Products:
Calcium Carbonate
Carbon Dioxide
Water
EQUATION IS BALANCED IMPACT THE RESEARCH HAD ON ME AND THE WORLD:
1. Fish wouldn't have places to live because a lot of fish make their homes in coral reefs.
2. There would be no fish to eat and fisheries would lose $$$$$
3. Tourist attractions (scuba diving) would lose $$$$$
4. We should try to reduce the harmful effect of global warming to save the coral reefs and the fish.
El fin. Bicarbonate combines with calcium ions in the water to make calcium carbonate, which help build the coral reefs. When coral reefs make calcium carbonate they add on
to their structure which makes the reefs grow. http://www.coral.noaa.gov/cleo/pdf/Carbon%20Dioxide%20background.pdf
