Transcript of A2 Physical Education - Periodisation

Periodisation
Periodisation
Warm-up Activity
Phases
Pre-Season
- Consists of
three
phases:
basic fitness
phase,
specific event
phase and lastly
pre-competition
phase.

Competition Season
- Consists of
two
phases:
maintenance
phase and
monitoring
&
recovery
phase.

Off Season/Transition
- Consists of
two
phases:
rest/recovery
phase and
transition
phase (gradual build up of physical activity - different sport)

Specialised Training
– plyometrics
– PNF stretching
– altitude training
– glycogen loading
– PERIODISATION
– thermoregulation in differing environments
– lactate sampling, respiratory exchange ratio
(RER).

Explain how a swimmer would use periodisation to prepare for competitions. (4 marks)
Can you:
Define Periodisation????
Peridisation Text Book Definition:

Periodisation is the
organised division of training
into a number of specific
blocks, periods or phases
.

It has the objective of ensuring athletes
progressively develop
to reach a
skill/physiological peak
at the
correct time
for an ultimate sporting target, for examples the Olympic Games.

Macro
- This is a
longer-term
plan of training aimed at achieving a
long-term goal/objective
. This cycle often consists of
one year
and can form part of a
MEGA
cycle!!! (4 years)

Macro cycles are made up of a number of meso cycles.

Meso
- This is a
medium term
plan/goal of training typically lasting between
4 and 16 weeks
.

Meso cycles can be split into
three phases
(pre-season, competition season and off-season/transition).

The
length
and
number
of meso cylces is dependent upon the
activity
and the
individual
.
Micro - This is a
short term
plan/goal of training, typically lasting
one week
(although a micro cycle can last up to three weeks).

A micro-cycle is simply a
number of training sessions which form a recurrent unit
.

The term
unit
is used in periodisation to show how many
sessions combine to make up a micro cycle
. For example an athlete training three times a week would have a micro cycle consisting of three units

Keep in Mind!!!
Other things to consider:
The periodisation method of training enables a coach/athlete to
vary training intensity
and
quantity
, so that a performer can
peak
for a major sports event/fixture/tournament.

This peaking often involves
tapering
, this means that training intensity
gradually reduces
over a period of time before a big event/fixture/tournament.

Why is this???

The
length
and
number
of meso cycles is dependent upon the
activity
and the
individual
.

What sports might require you to peak at two/three times within a macro cycle???

The
competition schedule
needs to be considered when planning as you may
double/triple
up the standard periodisation within a macro cycle.

Make a revision resource on periodisation:

Watch:

Warm-up Activity

You need to write down a one year training plan for an athlete in a sport of your choice.

Split this plan into three sections:
pre-season, competition, off-season
. (
use different coloured pens for each stage
)

Include
aims
for both your plan as a whole and each section of the plan.

Include
competitions/fixtures, training types and quantities.
