Transcript of An Introduction to Henna

What is henna? Henna, also known as Mehndi, is made from the leaves of the henna plant (lawsonia inermis, L.), a plant that grows best in hot, dry climates. The leaves contain a dye that binds to skin, and ranges in color from a dark brown to a light orange. * Henna does not dye the skin black! Black so-called "henna" dyes are dangerous... How Henna is Applied - free-hand with a cone, bottle, or syringe - by spreading the paste over a stencil or around tape *Henna is applied topically as a paste Where in the world is henna used? South Asia North Africa The Arabian Peninsula Here in the US When is henna done? - weddings and other celebrations - when spending time with friends and family Henna Tattoos and Religious Beliefs - henna is not a form of body modification; it is temporary adornment and does not harm the body (if anything, it is healthy: strengthens skin, has anti-fungal properties, and more). - henna is not associated with religion - motifs are often patterns and designs found in nature, not images of people Excellent Websites: http://www.hennapage.com/
