Economic Aspects Positives and Negatives Romanticism Pirates are seen today as cute, cool, and loving characters,
when in reality they were people who committed crimes, and
only cared about themselves. Pirates are very intelligent and should be given more credit as businessmen. Everything they did was for a reason. Acting mad, looking rugged and intimidating, and hanging the Jolly Roger Flag. Pirates did this so people would give in easily without a fight. When merchant ships would see the Jolly Roger they would pretty much give up because they feared their lives. Pirates got the reputation of looking scary because they also used this to retrieve plundered items without a fight from the enemy ship. (Leeson) Leeson, Peter T. The Invisible Hook: The Hidden Economics of Pirates. Princeton, N.J.: Princeton UP, 2009. The Somali pirates are actually sustaining the economy of Somalia. After they receive their ransom and stolen money they go to shore and spend it in restaraunts, homes, cars etc...This money is helping keep Somalia alive, and the people depend on them. (Somali) "Somali Pirates Live The Good Life - CBS News." Breaking News Headlines: Business, Entertainment & World News - CBS News. Web. 09 May 2010. People who pirate music are helping to keep the music industry alive. Its proven that people who pirate music are more likely to purchase digital copies of music, and are more likely to subscribe to music services. (Family) Family, Their Immediate. A ship or a fleet of ships with about 50 men on each 1. A small dinghy with 5-10 men 2. Had a Code of Conduct 2. Have no laws to govern each other 3. Content with plundering a ship or place and then going on about their business 3. More likely to hold people hostage and hold captured ships for a ransom until a deal is made. 1. They both have benefited society in a different way. Argh pirates served as privateers and protected the country they were hired by, and Somali pirates are sustaining the economy in Somalia.
2. They both have the same intent of greed, and steal to advance their own fortune. 3. The crew is comprised of specialized people. Argh pirates had captains for order, surgeons to help with wounds, and had basically a unique job for every person. Somali pirates are comprised of ex-fishermen, ex-militia, and tech savey men. They have the brains, the brawn, and the weapons to achieve their goals. Compared to music buyers, music sharers (pirates) are…

* 31% more likely to buy single tracks online.
* 33% more likely to buy music albums online.
* 100% more likely to pay for music subscription services.
* 60% more likely to pay for music on mobile phone. (Family) Bartholomew Roberts is the real pirate that the character Jack Sparrow is based on, and his drink of choice was tea and not rum. This is one of the many things Hollywood exaggerates. (Hudson) Hudson, Christopher. "The Real Jack Sparrow: He Would Have Eaten Johnny Depp for Breakfast | Mail Online." Home | Mail Online. Web. 16 May 2010. <http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-457724/The-Real-Jack-Sparrow-He-eaten-Johnny-Depp-breakfast.html>. Pirates of the 21st century were economic opportunists like pirates during the "Golden Age of Piracy", and attack in unpatrolled waterways where 90% of global trade happens. (Altman) Altman, Alex. "A Brief History of Pirates - TIME." Breaking News, Analysis, Politics, Blogs, News Photos, Video, Tech Reviews - TIME.com. Web. 16 May 2010. http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1846422,00.html "The original pirate flags were blood red, and this signalled that no mercy would be shown once the pirates boarded and battle ensued." (Piracy) Piracy, Organised. "A Brief History of Piracy | Online Information Bank | Research Collections | Royal Naval Museum at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard." Welcome | Royal Naval Museum at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Web. 19 May 2010. <http://www.royalnavalmuseum.org/info_sheets_piracy.htm>. Originally black flags were flown on ships to represent the plague and warn other ships. Who Are These Pirates? Pirates who take to the seas to plunder are generally fishermen, merchants, or people stricken by poverty who found piracy as a good option to turn to. Why Piracy? Piracy was actually a rational career choice during the "Golden Age of Piracy". It was a way for a merchant to earn a decent living. The positives of piracy are of course what they steal, however if they are caught they face prison or even death. For most of the men though, they are willing to take that chance because their lives were not great to begin with. 4. Some were hired as privateers by the governement to attack enemy nations. 4. They only work for themselves and do not take part in any form of governement Stop Piracy? Some attempts have been made to stop piracy, however there are some benefits that would make one not want to stop piracy. The economic benefits in Somalia, and the way music pirates have helped keep the music industry alive are but a few examples to keep piracy alive. However the negatives outway the positives, such that people die, and stealing is against the law and should not be pardoned. One attempt made in the year 1722, the Admiralty Trials hanged 52 pirates, thus diminishing the vast revolution of piracy. This almost thwarted piracy but made it less interesting for the public. However pirates still continued to plunder, even in todays society, although there are not as many colorful characters. (Cordingly) Cordingly, David, ed. Pirates: Terror on the High Seas. MA: World Publications Group, 2007. Started one of the first welfare systems. This was done by putting aside a portion of the money they stole in case of an injury, to be used for men who are no longer capable of plundering. (Cordingly) Most of the negative affects of piracy include murder and breaking the law. If one failed to comply with pirates orders, or choose to not join them, it would often result in torture and eventually murder. Music pirates may seem harmless however they are still breaking the law by stealing something thats not theirs. The same aspect applies to Somali pirates, who are also accountable for murder. http://www.piratemerch.com/pirate-flags-c-36.html http://www.themes4bb.com/forum/showthread.php?p=138214 Now the navy is fighting back and capturing pirates, and music pirating is decreasing, however piracy has been lessened before but still continues. Piracy has been around for thousands of years, and shows no signs of stopping. In many movies, both for children and adults pirates are seen as relatable characters that children look up to, and adults find entertaining. http://www.usaplayers.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/stop-sign.png hhttp://fairytalesbookstore.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/Pirate_sword.gif http://www.armybase.us/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/Weapons-seized-from-suspected-Somali-pirates.JPG 5.
