Operating Systems In 1991, Finnish computer science student Linus Torvalds made the Linux kernel. He used many GNU programs. NIX Linux is always being improved because anyone can create new versions. What is Linux? Linux is a free, open source, operating system that was modeled on UNIX; it is used by many major companies like: Ubuntu is the most popular Linux distrubution. About 50% of Linux users use Ubuntu. It was designed to be a more user-friendly version of Debian (another Linux distribution).
