Transcript of The Sum Total: Love

"What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, attained righteousness, even the righteousness which is by faith; but Israel, pursuing a law of righteousness, did not arrive at that law. Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as though it were by works."
Romans 9:30-32
The Sum Total: Love
1) The
Scriptures
make clear that a person
fulfills
the Law if they’ve pursued it in
faith
.
"Behold, as for the proud one, his soul is not right within him; but the righteous will live by his faith."
Habakkuk 2:4
"For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, 'BUT THE RIGHTEOUS man SHALL LIVE BY FAITH.'"
Romans 1:17
2)
Jesus
makes clear that the Old Testament Scriptures, in their
entirety,
are summed up in one word:
love
.
"'Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?' And He said to him, 'YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.' This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.'"
Matthew 22:36-40
"Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law. The commandments, 'Do not commit adultery,' 'Do not murder,' 'Do not steal,' 'Do not covet,' and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this one rule: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'"
Romans 13:8-9
3) This great feature of
love
, which came to us from
Him
, should exude out from us in
two
directions: toward
God
and
man
.
"This is His commandment (singular), that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us."
1 John 3:23
4) Placing these
two
realities together, which Scripture
frequently
does, it's important to note that
faith
must
precede
love.
"For this reason I too, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which exists among you and your love for all the saints."
Ephesians 1:15
"I thank my God always, making mention of you in my prayers, because I hear of your love and of the faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and toward all the saints."
Philemon 1:4-5
"We give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and the love which you have for all the saints."
Colossians 1:3-4
"…Timothy has come to us from you, and has brought us good news of your faith and love, and that you always think kindly of us, longing to see us just as we also long to see you."
1 Thessalonians 3:6
"We ought always to give thanks to God for you, brethren, as is only fitting, because your faith is greatly enlarged, and the love of each one of you toward one another grows ever greater."
2 Thessalonians 1:3
"...the grace of our Lord was more than abundant, with the faith and love which are found in Christ Jesus."
1 Timothy 1:14
"Retain the standard of sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus."
2 Timothy 1:13
"For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love."
Galatians 5:6
"But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith."
1 Timothy 1:5
5) The
Scriptures
make clear that faith
enables
love through
freeing
those who
walk
in it.
"So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, 'If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.' They answered Him, 'We are Abraham's descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, 'You will become free'?' Jesus answered them, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin.'"
John 8:31-34
"Do not worry then, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear for clothing?' For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."
Matthew 6:31 -33
“…that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith- that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”
Ephesians 3:17-21
"So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him."
1 John 4:16
