The history of Ballet
Ballet in the 1400s and 1500s
Ballet in the 1600s
In 1661, King Louis XIV created the first professional dance academy, called Académie Royale de Danse. Most international and European ballet companies can trace their roots back to the Académie Royal de Dance. From 1680-1687, a skilled dancer and choerographer named Pierre Beauchamps was the school's director.

Ballet in the 1800s
The romantic era of ballet is typically considered to have started with the ballet La Sylphide starring Marie Taglioni in 1827, and to have ended with Arthur Saint-Léon's 1870 ballet Coppélia. This era marked the rise of female ballerinas being a central part of ballet. Many popular ballets of today were first performed during this era. Some examples are Sleeping Beauty in 1890, The Nutcracker in 1892, and Swan Lake in 1895.

The origin of ballet can be traced back to the Italian renaissance in the 15th century. It was developed as a form of court entertainment, especially for wedding celebrations and lavish events. At these events, both members of the aristocracy and professional performers were hired as dancers to impress the nobility. In the mid 1500s there were huge shows, called spectaculi put on in northern Italy and later in France. They not only had dancing, but mock combats, equestrian demonstrations and even aquatic displays.

One of the first and probably best known ballet master of the era because he wrote down a lot of his work and choreography.

1454 - 1504
Italien master of entertainment who was credited with creating the "first ballet".

1535 - 1587
Violinist, composer and dance master, credited for establishing a unified dance spectacle, more similar to the ballets of today.

Académie Royal de Musique:
In 1669, King Louis XIV established Académie d'Opéra under the leadership of Pierre Perrin, a french poet and librettist. However, the king reestablished the Opéra as the Académie Royal de Musique after Perrin went bankrupt. It was then placed under the leadership of Jean-Baptiste Lully, with Peirre Beuchamp as one of the principal choreographers.

Credited with codifying the five positions of the feet and arms and creator of the comédie-ballet genre.

Credited as the first Prima Ballerina and the first professional female dancer.
Mademoiselle Marie-Therese de Subligny
1666 - 1735
Succeeded Mademoiselle de Lafontaine and earned the title as France's "Queen of Dance."
During the 1700s, ballet began to reform to become what we know it as today. The costume and choreography changed more than in any other time period. Also, it wasn't until the 1700s that women played as big a part in ballet as the men. The choreography in ballet began to contain more of a plot and the dancers became more expressive throughout the dance. Ballet d' action evolved and Jean Georges Noverre became the known voice of reform.
1. Dancers must be trained with sensitivity to the individual's anatomy.
2. Pedagogical consideration fo the dancer's personality and style is prerequisite to artistic development.
3. Valid and sincere gesture and expression are of the utmost importance in creating ballet.
4. Plots must be developed logically; they should be thematically integrated with movement. Superfluous solos and irrelevant technique should be omitted.
5. Music must be appropriately suited to the dramatic development of the plot.
6. Costumes, sets, and lighting must be compatible with the introduction, plot, and climax of each act within the ballet.
7. Masks must be removed and make up applied to heighten dancer's expressions.

One of the first female choreographers and first woman to discard her restrictive costume for a muslin dress.
Marie-Anne de Cupis de Carmargo
First woman to execute the entrechat quatre, wear a calf-length skirt, wear soft shoes instead of heels and first ballerina to wear ballet tights.
Jean Georges Noverre
1727 - 1810
The creator of ballet d'action and voice of reform who also taught Marie-Anoinette to dance.

The Romantic Era
The First Pointe Shoes
Marie Taglioni is often said to be the first Ballerina to dance on pointe, but it is not known for sure. However, it is established that in 1832 Taglioni danced in La Sylphide on pointe. Some people claim that Genevieve Gosselin developed the art of rising on pointes back in 1813. Others believe that Camargo had done so over one hundred years before. Nevertheless, it was Taglioni who pioneered and developed the technique, revolutionizing ballet.

Started the widening of the turnout and invention of attitude which changed the whole look of ballet.

One of the most renowned choreographers of the Romantic Era for his choreography of La Sylphide in 1832.
In France, ballet had grown to be very predictable, with many noticeable patterns. So in the 1900s, The Ballets Russes gave the ballet world a vibrant new art. After France had led the ballet for several centuries, Ballets Russes began to take over with new and interesting Russian music, costumes, subjects, themes and visual designs. Ballets Russes was considered the most significant part of the 1900s.

Widely regarded as one of the finest classical ballet dancers in history and the first ballerina to tour around the world with Ballets Russes.

Often considered as the greatest male dancer of the 20th century.

Principal Dancer of The Royal Ballet who was considered one of the greatest male dancers of all time.

Ballet Compared to Other Styles:
Before this year, I considered ballet to be one of the more dull styles of dance. However, after being a part of a real ballet production, I began to feel more of a connection towards ballet. I think one of the main reasons why I'm drawn to ballet, is the way classical ballet is used to tell a story. I love watching ballet productions that portray classic fairytales and even old folk tales. However, my favourite show has always been The Nutcracker, and every year in December my family would see it performed in theatres. Now that I have taken part in Ballet Victoria's version of The Nutcracker, I feel even more connected to ballet, and I find that I appreciate the art more than ever before.
A lot more has changed since the very beginning of ballet than society realizes. I find it very interesting to see the different standards and styles of dance in each time era. Overall, I think ballet has evolved into a great form of entertainment and art.
Ballet is considered the foundation for all other types of dance. This is mainly because ballet classes can help build proper technique and posture for many other styles of dance. Even though ballet is very traditional and "soft" compared to styles like modern and jazz, dancers who specialize in either of those styles, often rely on shaping their technique from learning ballet.
