A switch is a telecommunication device which receives a message from any device connected to it and then transmits the message only to the device for which the message was meant. Every network or device connected to it has their own dedicated connection. The Gateway is the device used to send network packets when wanting to access another device not located on the same network.
A gateway to another network or in this case, “the Internet”. To equally distribute the two ISP in the network, we must set the gateway addresses of all the workstations. For example... You want 15 PCs to use router #1 by default, so you must configure them as follows:
LAN IP - 192.168.8.101 to .110
Subnet - 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway - 192.168.2.1 (metric 10), 192.168.2.2 (metric 20) then configure the other 15 PCs to use router #2 by default:
LAN IP - 192.168.2.111 to .120
Subnet - 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway - 192.168.2.2 (metric 10), 192.168.2.1 (metric 20) The gateway with lower metric settings will be the gateway that the PC will use to connect to the Internet. Although you can just put the alternating DNS of your ISP or other directly on the LAN card of the PC, it is more efficient to properly configure the DNS settings on the routers and let the computers use the cached entries instead. Just imagine if all 30 computers request from the DNS server and that server is outside of the LAN. It will also eat up upstream bandwidth. Hence, just use the setup above for more efficiency, not to mention simplifying your setup if you want to change the DNS entries later on The network uses Star Topology CABLING Ethernet CATEGORY 5 UNSHIELDED TWISTED PAIR Cabling Eight-conductor data cable (CAT 5 UTP) contains 4 pairs of wires in an unshielded plastic sheath. Due to the competition of providing faster and more dedicated service to the clients, a well-designed network is the key for winning the business. Technological advancements offer a wide selection of devices for achieving the aim of the study, but the cost proficiency must be always deliberated in par with equipment performance.
The current network architecture of the subject is suitable to support the existing number of its workstations. But because of the shop’s location, situated in a well-populated area, possible expansion impose a way to further increase its market. A suggested brand modification and addition of networking equipment, in this case the switch, will aid the growth of workstations in the network. Performance upgrade in the server computer will ensure its capability to handle these changes. Upgrading the processor, increasing the memory and an appropriate operating system are the few things that must be considered. Furthermore, rearranging the positions of the computers made it easier to employ strategic cable connections to the system leading to lesser cable lengths which are less vulnerable to external noises and interferences.
In the end the proposed network topology consisting of two service providers is equally distributed to the number of workstations. Proper selection of the network devices and computer hardware will maintain the speed of data transmission throughout the network. In conclusion... GROUP 3
