Transcript of Life by Faith
God & the future
"After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him, and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, "
This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased."
God & the Past
"The eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is clear, your whole body also is full of light; but when it is bad, your body also is full of darkness."
Life by Faith
"...without faith it is impossible to please Him.'
"...whatever is not from faith is sin."
"Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen."
"And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him."
Faith is believing God is there and having the firm conviction that pursuing Him brings reward, even though we can’t see Him.
"And the LORD God commanded the man, 'You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.'"
"Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, "Indeed, has God said, 'You shall not eat from any tree of the garden '?" The woman said to the serpent, 'From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, 'You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.'" The serpent said to the woman, 'You surely will not die! For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.' When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate."
1. God’s freeing command is turned into something that robs joy.
"Indeed, has God said, 'You shall not eat from any tree of the garden '?"
"The woman said to the serpent, 'From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden...."
2. God’s gift of freedom is lessened.
"God has said, 'You shall not eat from it or touch it....'"
3. God’s command gets bigger.
4. God’s punishment gets lighter.
"God has said, 'You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.'"
5. God is turned to be against them.
"The serpent said to the woman, "You surely will not die! For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."
"…Israel, pursuing a law of righteousness, did not arrive at that law. Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as though it were by works."
"Jesus said to them, 'The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath."
"We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us."
1 John 3:16
25. Resolved, to examine carefully, and constantly, what that one thing in me is, which causes me in the least to doubt of the love of God; and to direct all my forces against it.

"To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those
who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus,
saints by calling...."
1 Corinthians 1:2
"...by His doing
you are in Christ Jesus,
who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and
, and redemption, so that, just as it is written, 'LET HIM WHO BOASTS, BOAST IN THE LORD.'"
1 Corinthians 1:30-31
"Do you not know that
you are a temple of God
and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy,
and that is what you are."
1 Corinthians 3:16-17
"Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed."
1 Corinthians 5:7
"...do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God."
1 Corinthians 6:9-11
“Christian obedience is not an expression of man’s effort gradually to realize his own innate potentialities, but an ever repeated response to the ever newly repeated summons of God.
Theology and Ethics in Paul
"Your faith has saved you; go in peace."
"One day as I was passing into the field…this sentence fell upon my soul. Thy righteousness is in heaven. And…I saw with the eyes of my soul Jesus Christ at God’s right hand; there, I say, was my righteousness; so that wherever I was, or whatever I was doing, God could not say of me, he [lacks] my righteousness, for that was before Him. I also saw, moreover, that it was not my good frame of heart that made my righteousness better, nor yet my bad frame that made my righteousness worse, for my righteousness was Jesus Christ Himself, ‘The same yesterday, today, and forever.’ Heb. 13:8. Now did my chains fall off my legs indeed. I was loosed from my afflictions and irons; my temptations also fled away; so that from that time those dreadful scriptures of God left off to trouble me; now went I also home rejoicing for the grace and love of God.”

"We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us."
1 John 4:16
(how I walk with Him)
"While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice out of the cloud said,
'This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!'"
“the disciple Jesus loved”
(John 21:7; 20)
"...the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me."
"Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?" 37 And He said to him,'YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.' This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets."
"Israel, pursuing a law of righteousness, did not arrive at that law. Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as though it were by works."
"...faith working through love."
"We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this, love is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment; because as He is, so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love. We love, because He first loved us."
1 John 4:16-19
"Because Your lovingkindness is better than life...."
"...faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ."
"For with You is the fountain of life; In Your light we see light."
