1. Review the competency model for your current position
2. Read the descriptions for each competency so you fully understand what it means.
3. Rate yourself on each competency based upon your current level of knowledge, skills and abilities. Are you:
OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN AND GROW
Individual development plans should be competency-based and can either emphasize:
Bringing performance up to an acceptable level,
Improving upon already effective performance levels, or
Preparing the employee to take on a new role.
The BEAUTY of COMPETENCIES
Everyone needs the information about performance.
Frequently
Honestly
Constant access to the information on how they are performing
They are the 'red thread' that links all talent management practices together and aligns talent strategy to business strategy.
They provide clear expectations that are aspirational.
They describe leadership skills that are general enough to prepare leaders for a dynamic business environment
They are the "how" of performance!
Structured, competency-based behavioral interviews can yield tremendous insight into how effectively a candidate has demonstrated competencies in past experiences
Yeah, but can
they do the job?
Learning -
acquiring the knowledge or skills through experience, study, or by being taught
Living -
exhibiting the necessary ability, knowledge, or skill to do this competency successfully on a daily basis
Role Modeling -
a person looked to by others as an example of how to excel in this competency; to be imitated
GET ALIGNED WITH YOUR DIRECT LEADER!
1. BY DECEMBER 31:
Share your competency self assessment
Your leader will share their assessment of you
Discuss similarities and differences
Discuss your current and future career goals
Your leader will share where they see your future - short and longer term.
Based upon that discussion, identify 2 - 3 core competencies to develop.
2. BY JANUARY 31:
Complete your 70/20/10 plan and present to your boss for feedback and final approvals.
Finalize your leadership development for the next 6 months
Revisit monthly, adjust as needed.
