Stages of using Books in Counseling
Why Use Stories
- Foster emotional and beahvoural growth as (Jalongo, 1993; Riordan & Wilson, 1989

- Less threatening method than directly talking about themselves.

- Reduce the feeling of ‘being alone’. (Christenbury, Beale & Patch, 1996; Nickolai-Mays, 1987)

- Encourage the development of compassion (Jensen, 2006)

• identify and validate their feelings;
• realize that other children have problems similar to their own;
• stimulate discussion;
• foster thought and self-awareness;
• discover possible coping skills and solutions; and
• decide on a constructive course of action.

The use of books in therapy is referred to as bibliotheraphy. Bibliotheraphy is a therapeutic tool uses literature, to assist individuals of all ages to work though the challenges they face in their life. Bibliotheraphy can be initiated both through an educational setting and a clinical setting.
1. IDENTIFICATION. The child identifies with a character, a story line, SOMETHING in the book that
catches their attention. .

2. CATHARSIS. The child is able to release emotions when he/she becomes emotionally involved in
the story.

3. INSIGHT. With the therapist's help, the child can come to possible solutions to their problem or coping strategies.
