How Teachers Can Implement
• Technology is more than just entertainment, new technologies (smartphones & tablets) influence the ways we think, learn and interact.
• Social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) as well as digital games (World of Warcraft) help shape the ways in which people communicate, collaborate, operate and form social constructs.
• How to implement technology is not new; teachers have attempted to implement technology as it has come out – the type writer, the television, calculators and computers all have been adapted into the classroom.
• Digital Games have two elements which make them worthwhile to players (1) interactive, playing environment; (2) the struggle of the player against some kind of opponent

In What Ways do Teachers Abuse the Use of Technology in their Classrooms?
Although the use of technology in the primary classroom shows definite promise, some teachers may use technology just because it is readily available, without thinking if it is indeed educational and enhances the learning experience.
How Can Technology Promote Creative Thinking With Our Students?
Let's think about from whence it all began, because technology has been part of education from the start and every advance has allowed for new ways of thinking. Creative thought uses a fresh perspective to view the world around us. There can be no advances in our society without creativity.

Therefore, how and when technology is used needs to be considered, as does its purpose.
Technology Abuses
Types of technological abuses in the
primary classroom include:
1. Using technology simply as a "digital worksheet"
2. Using technology as a way to keep students occupied
3. Using technology in instances that can easily be done without it
Many apps and Internet sites are simply a technological version of a paper task, forcing students to practice skills that they may have prior experience of.
Technology should not be used to keep students occupied, especially when the teacher is working with other children.
Technology should allow you to complete a task in
a way that is both new and worthwhile, not one that
can be done elsewhere, such as
on paper - i.e. drawing a picture.
Overall, using technology in the classroom should not just allow us to do the "traditional" in a different way.

Currently in 2014/2015 Classrooms
Ontario is helping students from junior kindergarten to Grade 12 develop 21st century skills by investing in classroom technology that enriches their learning, such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication and collaboration skills.
Ontario's $150 million technology and learning fund will give students more opportunities to become technologically "aware" with tools, such as tablets, notebooks, cameras and software.
“Students today are growing up in a world where technology and digital resources are an integral part of their everyday lives. We need to tap into that existing knowledge and familiarity with technology to make learning even more compelling, and allow our students to become the innovators, entrepreneurs and leaders of tomorrow.”

Canadian math program appropriate for ages 5-18, providing immediate results to teachers, parents and students. It is directly correlated with the curriculum, and can be modified by classroom teachers to suit students' needs.
An online K-8 math and reading program that aligns with provincial curriculum, can be modified for each student and provides up-to-date, accurate results to the teacher.
This program allows children to create webs, stories, movies to demonstrate learning, uploading them into a portfolio that can be assessed by the teacher.
Grammar Crush -
This app is accessible on tablets, computers, iPhones, etc. Geared toward older grades, it allows students to choose interests and complete teacher designed and selected grammar activities. The results are then sent to the teacher who then compiles them per student and assigns further work.
Kidspiration -
An excellent and easy idea to make records and evaluate your students on their reading ability is to videotape them during guided reading sessions, keep a file per student, track development and progress.

Smart Response -
Used with a SmartBoard, these devices allow teachers to ask a question with 6 possible answers. Students click the corresponding button at which point their answer is entered into the database and is graphed by their individual student number. Excellent for mid lesson check-ups.
Assessment and Evaluation Using Technology
Teaching in the 21st century means that students are expected to demonstrate more skills then before, specifically high order thinking, often not measured by standard written tests.
Using technology to gauge teamwork, student recall, analysis, etc allows teachers to provide students with immediate feedback. Teacher intervention for confusing topics as well as modifications are much easier to accomplish through the use of technology.
Educators are now adapting to this new way of teaching, seeing it as a chance to further engage and enhance their students' overall learning.
With this new approach to teaching comes outlooks which expand the topic of integrating technology into the primary classroom, and thus, becoming a focus for our group's presentation.

Integrating 21st Century technology has now become the norm found in present day classrooms.

Technology can be an engaging experience for a young student. It is an interactive tool that can allow divergent thinking, a defining component of creativity. It allows for curiosities to be satisfied. It is interactive, but driven by the student themselves. It can allow students to express freely and without worry of making a mistake. It allows for the experience to be as unique as the student. Technology is also beneficial for those students living with learning challenges, by providing a means to 'work around' their hurtle and contribute in ways that may have been previously blocked. Some technologies can even make learning fun with novel concepts and interesting graphics. Creativity is closely tied to curiosity.
It is argued there is a "need for creativity study and for investment in developing the individuals’ creative potential, especially because we are living in a world in which scientific and technological progress can not be conceived without the great work of creative genius."

Statistics: Younger Children and Technology
Nearly half of first-time mobile tech users aren't even in kindergarten yet. Above, you will see the percentage of children who have used a smart device, such as an iPad or a video iPod.
Relation to Course Content and Readings
Module 1:
the primary teacher assists the child with his/her cognitive development. As such, the educator provides a learning environment that is "conducive to the development of the child's way of thinking."
Moreover, Jean Piaget's work on how children learn and their cognitive development connects to the idea of an "interactive process between the individual and the environment" as well as the concept of play as the "vehicle of learning."
As such, the integration of technology pertains to this, for the devices are well-known by the children, given present day society, are "hands-on" and conform to what students may consider "fun" and engaging.
According to Piaget's "Stages of Cognitive Development"
Each stage of the child's cognitive development relates to how the child reacts, visualizes and understands learning, especially with regards to technology.
Developing a Literate Classroom
Module 2:
Through the use of 21st Century Technology, such as the computer, the young student is able to “move from the familiar world of reading and writing words on paper to a whole new area of processing electronic text, graphics and sound”

Integrating technology (i.e Smartboards, iPads) enhances student literacy, the learner’s knowledge and ability to understand literacy to new heights

As teachers, it is becoming increasingly important that we not only incorporate technology into our lessons, but ensure that it is seamless. Using technology as a means for assessment and evaluation means that students are able to able to get immediate results and teachers are able to develop different tools and strategies to gather information on each student.

Keeping a classroom Twitter account not only allows you to show what the students are learning on a daily basis, but allows parents to communicate quickly with the teacher.

Using drawing and story telling, this app has the student as a night zookeeper and there are dangers out there. And it's free!

Whiteboard Lite: Collaborative Drawing
. This app allows for peer to peer networking and collaborative activites. It is also a free app, found at itunes.

Doodle Buddy for iPad – Paint, Draw, Scribble, Sketch – It’s Addictive!
And it is free from itunes.

A study was done to test out various educational apps on different devices, to see which ones were better suited for the skills and needs of both the teacher and students
Teachers compared technological brands, the download speed, price, educational value of the apps, and more.
Overall, many educators prefered products designed by Apple, as they felt it was better programed to suit their needs, as well as that of their students.

The College states the important factor that all teachers want to be aware of at all times, and that's the use of technology in the classroom, but more importantly, how to use it in ways that are fun, creative, and engaging for students.
The following link showcases four teachers who are integrating technology in their classroom, how they are going about it, and how all teachers can do the same:
The Ontario College of Teachers states that the use of new technologies in class is to "enhance students' educational experiences."
Barbara Burrington, author of "Look How Far We've Come!" states that technology can be used effectively to showcase a child's growth and development throughout the school year:

1. Taking and displaying photographs
On display boards, in classroom photo albums, and individual portfolios.
Photographs include: of students' work, participation in group events, attempts at group collaboration/problem solving.
2. Experiment with digital images:
Slideshows and movies are a great way to demonstrate students' work and allows for the opportunity to reflect.
3. Create classroom web pages:
Allows the entire class to contribute and participate some of the following: images, stories, and their own work.
4. Use of email:
Teachers can use it as a way to interact with parents, so they too can stay informed and monitor their child's progress and growth
