CHANGING THE MEANING OF LIFE Artificial Organs and Bionics Design By: Janet Wu WHAT IS AN ARTIFICIAL ORGAN? A man-made device that is implanted or integrated into a human to replace a natural organ WHAT IS AN ARTIFICIAL BIONIC? The technique of replacing a limb or body part by an artificial limb or part that is electronically or mechanically powered WHAT IS THE PURPOSE? The purpose is to restore a patient's body the way it was before, so they can live a happy, healthy, normal life What Is... Pros / Benefits Different Types of Artificial Organs and Bionics Heart Windpipe Lungs Hand By: Lizzy Cociuba Ear Also skin, bladder, blood vessels and muscle are made like the ear. http://prezi.com/jipk518auiwm/artificial-organs/ -Pieces of artificial organs can be used to replace damaged organs http://physiology101.blogspot.com/2010/03/artificial-organs.html -Allows the patient to possibly conquer a disease or illness like lung cancer or other heart problems -Has the possibility of prolonging life and making the general quality of life better -Can help burn victims regenerate skin -Organ transplant lists will become unnecessary one day Cons / Risks -Possible presence of hidden disease/illness in the base tissue. There is the possibility that if foreign body tissue was used to reconstruct particular tissue matter for a patient, there could be hidden disease within that tissue. -Ethical issues http://www.ehow.com/list_5915811_risks-benefits-artificial-heart.html -Internal blood clots and bleeding can often result from the surgery - For Artificial Heart =The risk of infection is very high with the type of artificial heart that requires an external power source -Very little chance that body might not accept the organ; possible infections, diseases, or sickness; But the artificial organs that were already used on patients have not experienced any of these (video) -Devices might fail or stop working because body does not accept organ Uses for Artificial Organs Artificial organs offer the FUTURE for medicine. They could possibly offer a cure for... -Skin Disease through regeneration of skin. -Diabetes through the replacement of the diseased persons pancreas -Cancer affecting that specific organ Eventually if people "wore" out an organ they could simply go to the doctor for a brand new one. How it's Done... Scientists are able to "print" cells out using a 3D printer that uses human cells and a "goop" to hold it all together. The 3-D technique is easy enough for most labs to set up immediately. It uses magnetic forces to hover cells over each other while they divide and grow.

Compared with cell cultures, grown on flat surfaces, the 3-D cell cultures tend to form tissues that more closely resemble those inside the body. The Ethics * * * * = Mechanically operated Many remain against the invention due to: Stem Cells - Stem Cells are: Found in all mulitcellular organisms, that can divide and differentiate into diverse specialized cell types and can self-renew to produce more stem cells. -However many Christians and believers of other major religions believe this allows scientists to "play God." The downside to this is that stem cells form the major footnote for artificial organs and until recent developments, stem cells were the only way to produce such organs. http://books.google.com/books?id=Seresoz8QdIC&pg=SA10-PA13&dq=Artificial+organs+pros+and+cons&hl=en&sa=X&ei=xHZgUYKCKpHNqAHP0oG4Bw&ved=0CDUQ6wEwAA#v=onepage&q=Artificial%20organs%20pros%20and%20cons&f=false My Opinion: I respect the religious views of others, however i find it ridiculous for people's theories to determine life or death. I think that the invention of Artificial Organs is a great one because, even through all the cons or risks, one day it could all be worth the surgery. I couldn't live with being in pain, so if i had cardiac or lung cancer, an artificial heart or lungs could save my life and i would no longer have to endure that pain. The Future!!! In the future should your bones crack, your back ache or your heart grow old, you'll be able to simply replace them. Soon, the invention of Artificial Organs will result in a world free of cancer or diseases!!! Science http://www.google.com/imghp?hl=en&tab=wi I believe that Artificial Organs can prolong a persons life and one day those who wait months for a transplant, will only have to wait a couple weeks or even days. Statistics and scientists have proven that Artificial organs can become the FUTURE. *Needs a scaffold to bring out shape of organ!! * Recent developments in video. VIDEO!!! Sources
