He also drank a cup of shark liver oil each day from the big drum in the shack where many of the fishermen kept their gear.
It was there for all fishermen who wanted it. Most fishermen hated the taste. But it was no worse than getting up at the hours that they rose and it was very good against cold and grippes and it was good for the eyes.

Now the old man looked up and saw that the bird was circling again. (37)

Hemingway uses the imagery of taste to makes us understand what the old man does every morning to feel strong.This reveals that even though he fishes every day without catching any fish he still tries to maintain his strength by drinking a cup of shark liver oil.

Hemingway uses the imagery of sight to make us understand that every time the bird was circling around is when there are fish near the old man. This reveals that even though the old man can't catch a fish he knows that they are some fish near him so he doesn't give up.

Hemingway uses imagery to create a more vivid image to the readers head of the importance of the old man persistent with fishing. For example, he describes the taste and sight of him drinking a glass of shark liver oil to makes us understand what the old man does every morning to feel strong "... He also drank a cup of shark liver oil each day from the big drum in the shack where many of the fishermen kept their gear". This quote reveals that even though the old man fishes every day without catching any fish he still tries to maintain his strength by drinking a cup of shark liver oil. In addition hemingway describes the bird circling around to let the old man that there is something near him " Now the old man looked up and saw that the bird was circling again." This reveals that

even though the old man can't catch a fish he still maintain his persistenceof not giving up. He stills have the stregh of somehow he'll catch a fish.
